Stone cottages to semis
We work on old timber doors, 1930s semis and newer uPVC and composite doors across S17.
Honest arrival times
Totley is on the edge of the city, so we give you a realistic time when you call.
Non destructive entry first
We try to open the door without damage, and agree any drilling with you before we start.
Price agreed first
You know the starting price before we leave, and you pay by cash, card or transfer after.
Our mobile locksmith Totley service runs around the clock and covers the whole of S17, from the shops at Totley Rise up to the lanes where the houses meet the moors. Our van is based on Broughton Lane in S9, so we come round the outer ring road and out along the A621 Abbeydale Road South. Because Totley sits right on the south west edge of Sheffield, we always give you an honest arrival time on the phone rather than a number that sounds good and then slips.
The housing here is a real mix. You have older stone cottages and farmhouses near the edge of the Peak District, solid 1930s semis around Totley Rise and Totley Brook, post war houses in Bradway and plenty of 1970s and 1980s homes with uPVC doors that are now starting to wear. That means one call can be a sticking mortice on an oak door and the next a multipoint gearbox that has given up. We carry parts for both, so most jobs are finished on the first visit.
Why a locksmith call in Totley is a bit different
Totley is one of the furthest parts of Sheffield from our base, and a lot of homes here are set back from the road with long drives, side gates and detached garages. Those details matter. A lockout at the back door of a cottage off Baslow Road is not the same job as a front door on a busy street, and a garage or gate lock is often part of the same visit.
When you ring, tell us which door you are locked out of, what kind of lock it is if you know, and whether there is another way in such as a patio or side door. That helps us bring the right tools and give you a fair price. If you are stuck outside in the cold, we will tell you straight how long we will be, which is typically 30 to 50 minutes for Totley, so you can decide whether to wait in the car or with a neighbour.
We are police approved and we always check ID or proof of address before opening a home. People in quieter areas sometimes find that reassuring rather than a nuisance.
Older timber doors and mortice locks in S17
Many Totley and Bradway homes still have a timber front door with a mortice lock and a nightlatch. Some of those mortice locks are old 2 lever or 3 lever types that will not meet most insurers' wording, which usually asks for a 5 lever lock to BS3621. If your policy says that, we can fit a BS3621 mortice lock into the existing door, often using the same keep so the frame is not chopped about.
Old timber doors also swell in wet weather and shrink in dry spells. A lock that turns fine in July can bind badly in a damp November. Before replacing anything, we check whether the real problem is the door dropping on its hinges or the keep being out of line. Sometimes a small adjustment and a lock service is all you need, which keeps the cost down.
- 5 lever BS3621 mortice from £75
- 3 lever mortice from £40
- Standard nightlatch from £20, double locking nightlatch from £45
- Lock repair from £55 where a part can be saved
uPVC and composite doors on the newer Bradway and Totley estates
The 1970s and 1980s houses in this part of Sheffield often have their second or third uPVC door by now, and plenty of those are ten or fifteen years old. The usual faults are a handle that drops, a key that only turns halfway, or a door you have to lift hard before it will lock. Those are almost always signs that the multipoint mechanism or the gearbox is wearing out.
We repair uPVC door locks from £20 and replace full multipoint locks from £40 plus the part. If the door is a composite, the same lock types usually apply, though the door itself needs a gentler hand when adjusting. While we are there we can also swap a standard euro cylinder for an anti snap one from £120, which is the single most useful upgrade on most uPVC and composite doors.
Locked out or lost keys near Totley Rise and Beauchief
Lockouts happen to everyone, often on the way back from a walk, after a pub evening or when a door slams in the wind. Our emergency lockout service starts from £59 and we use non destructive methods first. On a nightlatch or a uPVC door that has not been locked with the key, we can usually get you in without any damage at all.
If the door has been deadlocked, or you have lost your keys altogether, the job may need a new cylinder or mortice lock so the old keys no longer work. We explain that on the doorstep before we start and agree the cost with you. For lost keys, think about who else might have a copy, such as a cleaner or a past tenant, and whether it is worth changing every external lock at once.
Car locked with the keys inside at a trailhead or on Baslow Road? Our car lockout service starts from £65. We open the car only; we do not cut or program car keys.
Garages, gates and outbuildings
Detached garages, garden gates and sheds are common in Totley and Bradway, and those locks are often the first to seize because they get the worst of the weather. We fit and repair garage door locks from £20 and padlocks from £20, and can replace a tired gate lock with something sturdier.
If you keep bikes, tools or garden machinery outside, it is worth looking at the whole route a thief would take: the side gate, the shed door and the garage. We can advise on a sensible set of locks rather than just changing one. For a rusted or jammed garage door, see our garage door lockout page.
What to expect when we come out to S17
You ring us on 0114 463 0063, describe the problem and we give you a starting price and an arrival time. When we arrive we confirm the job, check ID for a home entry, and tell you if anything has changed once we see the lock. Nothing extra goes ahead without your say so.
When the work is done we test every lock with you, hand over the keys and take payment by cash, card or bank transfer. If we spot something else that needs attention, such as a worn hinge or a weak keep, we will mention it, but there is no pressure to have it done that day.
