Car lockout from £65
Starting price agreed on the phone before we set off
Our car lockout service in Sheffield opens your car when the keys are locked inside the cabin or the boot, at home, at work or in a car park, from £65. We usually reach you in 25 to 45 minutes from our base at 45 Broughton Lane S9 and open most cars without damage. To be clear from the start: we only open cars. We do not cut, program or replace car keys, so if your car keys are lost rather than locked in, you need an auto locksmith or your dealer.
If a child, vulnerable adult or pet is locked in a car, call 999 first.
Child or pet locked in the car? Call 999 first
Do not wait for a locksmith
A car heats up fast, even on a mild Sheffield day, and a small child or a dog can be in danger within minutes. Call 999 straight away and follow the operator's advice. Emergency services will decide whether to break a window. Once everyone is safe, we can help with the rest.
The same applies if someone inside the car is unwell or distressed. A locksmith is the right call for keys on a seat, not for a person or animal at risk.
Car opening only: what we do and do not do
What we do
Open a locked car or boot when your working keys are inside, so you can drive away with your own key. That is the whole service.
Keys locked in car: call us.
What we do not do
We do not cut, program, copy or replace car keys or remote fobs, and we do not repair car locks, ignitions or immobilisers.
Lost or broken car key: contact an auto locksmith or your main dealer.
We say this plainly because a lot of people search for a car locksmith when their key has been lost outright. If the key is not in the car, opening the door will not get you home, and we would rather tell you on the phone than charge you for a wasted trip.
Where we attend car lockouts in Sheffield
Car lockouts happen wherever people are in a hurry: unloading shopping, strapping a baby seat in, or throwing a bag in the boot with the keys still in it. We attend:
Our Broughton Lane base is close to Meadowhall and the east side of the city, so those calls are often quick. Cars on the Peak District edge, such as walkers' car parks west of the city, take longer to reach, and we give you an honest time when you call. For neighbouring towns, see our pages for Rotherham and the wider areas we cover.
Locked keys in car? Check these first
- Try every door and the boot. It sounds obvious, but one door is often still unlocked, especially on older cars.
- Look for a spare key at home. If someone can bring it, that is the quickest and cheapest fix.
- Check your breakdown cover. Some policies include help with keys locked in the car. Have your policy number ready.
- Confirm the key is in the car. If you can see it, great. If you are not sure, search pockets and bags before booking, because we cannot help with a lost key.
- Do not try to force a window or door. Coat hangers and wedges damage seals, wiring and paint, and can set off the alarm.
Why do cars lock with the keys inside?
Most people assume a modern car will refuse to lock with the key inside. Many do, but not every model, and not in every situation. The usual reasons we hear about:
| What happened | Why it happens |
|---|---|
| Car relocked itself after being unlocked | Many cars relock automatically if no door is opened within a short time after unlocking |
| Boot shut with the keys inside | On some models the boot latches and locks even with the fob in the luggage area |
| A child pressed the fob | Keys handed to a toddler in a car seat are a classic cause |
| Keyless fob not detected | A weak fob battery or interference can stop the car sensing the key inside |
| Older car with manual locks | Pressing the lock button and shutting the door locks it, key or not |
If your car keeps locking itself unexpectedly, that is a fault for a garage or dealer to look at, not something we repair.
How a car lockout call-out works
Call us
Tell us the make, model and year, where the car is and where the keys are, cabin or boot.
Price agreed
We confirm the starting price, plus any evening or weekend supplement, before we set off.
Ownership check
On arrival we check photo ID against the vehicle documents or another proof that the car is yours.
Car opened
We open the car with non-destructive tools, you retrieve your keys and check everything works.
We do not publish how cars are opened, for obvious reasons. What matters to you is that the approach is designed to leave the door, glass, seals and lock as they were.
What proof of ownership do we need?
Opening someone else's car would be helping a theft, so we check before we start. Any of these, alongside photo ID with a matching name or address, usually works:
- The V5C logbook, or a photo of it on your phone.
- Your insurance certificate or app showing the registration.
- A lease, finance or company car document naming you or your employer.
- Paperwork found inside the car once it is open, checked before you drive away.
If the car is a company or hire vehicle, the hire firm or fleet manager may need to confirm by phone. If ownership cannot be shown, we will not open the car.
