If your uPVC door won't lock in Sheffield, we come out the same day, usually within 25 to 45 minutes, and fix the cause with repairs starting from £20 for a cylinder swap or simple adjustment. Almost every case comes down to one of four faults: the door has dropped, the keeps are out of line, the gearbox inside the lock has failed, or the cylinder is worn.

This page walks through each symptom, a couple of safe checks you can make yourself, and when an adjustment is enough versus when a part has to go in.

Why won't my uPVC door lock? Start with the symptom

uPVC doors lock in two stages. First you lift the handle, which throws the hooks, rollers or bolts along the edge of the door into the frame. Then you turn the key, which deadlocks everything in place. Where the process stops tells us most of what we need to know.

Handle will not lift at all

The hooks are hitting the keeps, or the gearbox is jammed. Try lifting with the door open: if it moves freely, the door is out of line. If it is still stuck, the gearbox is the suspect.

Handle lifts but the key will not turn

The hooks may only be partly engaged, so the deadbolt cannot shoot. Or the cylinder is worn and the cam is not catching.

Locks only if you push, pull or lift

A classic dropped door. The lock is fine; the door has sagged on its hinges.

Handle lifts, key turns, door still opens

Something inside has snapped, often a connecting rod or the gearbox itself. This needs a part.

Three checks you can make in two minutes

  1. Lift the handle with the door open. Watch the edge of the door. If every hook and roller moves out smoothly, the mechanism is working and the problem is in the frame.
  2. Look at the keeps. These are the metal plates on the frame. Check for debris, loose screws or shiny wear marks off to one side, which show where the hooks have been hitting.
  3. Check the gap. Close the door and look at the gap around it. A gap that narrows towards the bottom on the lock side points to a dropped door.

Pass on what you find when you call. It helps us bring the right parts first time.

A dropped door: the most common culprit

uPVC doors are heavy, and the hinges slowly give under the weight. A few millimetres of sag at the lock side is enough to stop the hooks finding their keeps. You will often see the gap between door and frame is wider at the top than the bottom, or a rubbing mark where the door catches the frame.

Most uPVC door hinges can be adjusted for height, side to side position and compression. We realign the door so the locking points line up again, then check it locks smoothly without any pushing. This is often a short job and is the reason we always check alignment before talking about new parts.

Doors on houses that have settled, which is not unusual on Sheffield hillsides, may also need the keeps moved. If the door slab itself is damaged or warped, our door repair service covers that.

uPVC door won't lock when hot, or after a cold night

uPVC expands in strong sun and contracts in the cold. A south or west facing door can move enough on a hot afternoon to stop locking, then work perfectly the next morning. Composite doors move too, though less.

If the problem comes and goes with the weather, the fix is usually to adjust the keeps so the hooks and rollers have enough tolerance in both conditions. Some keeps have adjustable cams for this. What we would not do is file down keeps or remove locking points, which can leave the door less secure and void warranties.

Do not force the handle

Leaning on a handle that will not lift is the quickest way to turn a small adjustment into a broken gearbox. If it needs more than normal effort, stop and call.

When the gearbox has failed

The gearbox is the central case behind the handle and cylinder. It converts the handle movement into the long stroke that drives the hooks and bolts. Over thousands of cycles, or after years of being forced on a misaligned door, the springs and gears inside wear out.

Telltale signs are a handle that feels loose and floppy, a handle that will not return to horizontal, or a key that turns but no longer retracts the latch. On many locks we can replace just the gearbox rather than the whole strip, as long as we can match the backset and centres. The details of how that decision is made are on our multipoint lock repair page.

Key will not turn in a uPVC door: the cylinder

If the handle lifts freely and the hooks are engaged but the key will not turn, test the key with the door open and the handle lifted. If it still sticks, the cylinder is the likely cause. Cylinders wear, keys wear, and cheap original cylinders are often the first part to give up.

A replacement euro cylinder starts from £20 and takes a short time to fit. It is also a good moment to move up to an anti snap cylinder rated TS007 3 star, which we explain on our anti snap locks page.

Questions and Answers

That almost always means the door has dropped or the keeps have moved, so the hooks hit the frame instead of sliding into the keeps. The lock itself is working. A hinge or keep adjustment usually fixes it without new parts.
Either the locking points are catching on the frame, or the gearbox has failed. Try lifting with the door open. If it lifts easily, the door needs realigning. If it is still stiff with the door open, the gearbox likely needs replacing.
On most uPVC doors the handle must be lifted fully before the key will turn. If you have done that and it still will not move, the cylinder may be worn or the hooks are not fully engaged. Do not force the key; it can snap.
Adjustments and uPVC door lock repairs start from £20. A new cylinder starts from £20, a multipoint lock from £40, and door repairs from £79. We confirm which applies on the phone and price it before we start.
Yes. uPVC expands in sun and heat, especially on south facing doors, and can move enough to miss the keeps. Adjusting the keeps to allow for movement normally stops it happening each summer.
No. On the latch, only one point holds the door and the multipoint lock is not engaged. If yours will not lock, call us. We work 24 hours and will make the door secure the same night.
