The homes in this part of Sheffield are varied. Gleadless Valley is known for its post war council estate built into a steep hillside, with houses, maisonettes and flats on several levels. Manor and Arbourthorne have a lot of council built semis and terraces, Intake has older terraces and 1930s houses off Mansfield Road, and Norfolk Park has seen a lot of newer housing. That mix means we are just as likely to be fitting a flat door lock as repairing a uPVC back door.
Flat and maisonette door locks in Gleadless Valley
Many front doors on the Gleadless Valley estate open onto walkways, landings or shared stairs rather than a street. A lot of these are fire doors, which matters when locks are changed: the lock should suit the door and not weaken it. We replace like for like where we can and keep the door closing and latching properly.
Communal entrance doors are usually the responsibility of the council or housing provider, so if the shared door is broken you should report it to them. Your own flat door is a different matter. If you are locked out, have lost your keys or the lock is failing, we can help. Houses in Manor, Arbourthorne and Gleadless Townend
Across Manor and Arbourthorne a lot of homes have uPVC or composite doors that were fitted during improvement works years ago. Those doors work well until the multipoint lock begins to wear, then the handle gets stiff and the key starts to catch. Getting it looked at early means a lock repair rather than a full replacement in many cases.
If the cylinder is the original, we recommend an upgrade to an anti snap cylinder from £120. It is a quick job and makes a real difference to how hard the door is to attack. We also fix composite doors that have dropped or stopped locking, and adjust hinges and keeps so the door closes without slamming.
Older terraces in Intake and newer homes in Norfolk Park
Intake, around Mansfield Road and up towards Hollinsend, has its share of older terraces and 1930s houses, some still with timber doors. On those we often find tired mortice locks and nightlatches. If your home insurance mentions a 5 lever lock to BS3621, we can fit one from £75 and set it into the existing door.
Norfolk Park has a lot of newer housing with modern multipoint doors. These are usually in good order, but keys get lost and locks still need changing when people move in. When you buy a house, you do not know how many keys are out there, so a lock change on moving day is a sensible step and usually costs less than people expect.
Lost keys and lockouts in S12 and S14
Lockouts often happen at awkward moments: getting home from a late shift, stepping out to the bins, or after a night out in town and a tram back to Gleadless Townend or Manor Top. Broken keys and stuck locks
Worn keys snap, especially in older cylinders that have been sticking for a while. If part of the key is left in the lock, do not try to push it out with the rest of the key or a pin, as that often drives it deeper. Our broken key extraction service starts from £55, and if the lock is damaged we can replace the cylinder there and then.
A lock that has become stiff is a warning sign. A cylinder that needs force to turn is wearing out the key every time, and that is usually how keys end up snapping.
