Our bifold door repair service in Sheffield fixes existing aluminium and uPVC bifold doors: dropped panels, worn rollers and guides, misaligned tracks, shootbolts that will not engage, and master door locks and cylinders, with replacement cylinders from £20 and a locksmith usually on site in 25 to 45 minutes. Most repair work is quoted from a photo first. Please note we repair bifolds only; we do not supply or fit new bifold doors.

Here is how to work out what is wrong with yours and what a repair usually involves.

How a bifold door works, and why small faults spread

A bifold is a set of hinged leaves that fold and slide along a track. Each panel is carried by rollers, either running along a top track with guides in a bottom channel, or rolling on the bottom track with guides at the top. One leaf, the master or traffic door, opens like a normal door and carries the main lock and handle. The other leaves are held shut by shootbolts that slide up into the head and down into the threshold.

Because the leaves are hinged together, one panel sitting a few millimetres low pulls its neighbours out of line. That is why a bifold that was slightly stiff in spring can refuse to close properly by autumn. Fixing the first sign early is cheaper and easier than waiting.

If you are not sure which applies, photos of the top track, the bottom channel and the master door lock usually tell us enough to give a starting price.

Dropped panels, worn rollers and misaligned tracks

Rollers take the full weight of large glazed panels, and on wide sets that is a lot of glass. Over the years the wheels flatten or their bearings wear, and the panel sinks. You notice it as a scrape, a heavier push, or one leaf no longer meeting its neighbour squarely.

  1. Assess. We check each leaf for level and square and find which carrier or hinge is worn.
  2. Support the panel. The leaf is taken off load safely before any part is removed.
  3. Replace or adjust. Rollers, guides or hinge packers are replaced with matching parts where they can be sourced, then height is adjusted.
  4. Test the full run. Every leaf is folded, stacked and closed several times to check the seals meet and the bolts line up.

Some systems use proprietary rollers that only the manufacturer supplies. We tell you if that is the case before you commit, and photos of any labels on the frame help identify the system.

Bifold door lock, shootbolt and handle repairs

The master door on most bifolds uses a multipoint lock with a euro cylinder, similar to a modern front door, while the folding leaves have shootbolts operated by a lever or handle. When the doors will not lock, it is usually alignment rather than a broken lock, so we adjust before we replace.

Where parts have failed, we can replace the cylinder, the handle set, individual shootbolts or the master door gearbox. If you are changing the cylinder anyway, it is worth fitting an anti snap one, since bifolds usually face a back garden out of sight from the street. Our euro cylinder replacement page explains sizing and our guide on the benefits of anti snap cylinders explains the upgrade. For handles specifically, see our door handle replacement service.

Aluminium and uPVC bifolds: how repairs differ

Aluminium bifolds

Stiff, slim frames that carry large panes well. Aluminium expands in strong sun, so a south facing set can tighten on warm afternoons and loosen at night. Parts are often system specific.

Usually adjustable; identify the system first.

uPVC bifolds

Lower cost and more flexible. Long uPVC leaves can sag or bow over time, especially on wider sets, which shows up as dragging and poor sealing.

Adjustment helps; severe bowing may be beyond repair.

Either way, seasonal movement means a little readjustment now and then is normal. Doing it before winter helps the seals do their job when Sheffield weather turns.

When the installer or manufacturer is the better call

Repair only

We repair existing bifold doors. We do not supply or fit new bifold doors or whole new frames.

Contact your installer or the manufacturer first if:

  • The doors are still under warranty, as outside work may affect it.
  • Glass is cracked or a sealed unit has misted; that is a glazing job.
  • The outer frame itself has bowed, or the opening has moved after building work.
  • The system needs parts that are only sold to approved installers.

For conventional sliding doors and French doors, our patio door repair page is the right place, and if it is a standard back or front door, try our door repair service.

Keeping bifold doors running smoothly

Most bifold trouble starts in the bottom track. Grit, leaves and dried mud get trodden in and act like a brake on the rollers. Vacuum the channel regularly, wipe it with a damp cloth, and keep drainage slots clear so water does not sit. Use only a light, silicone based lubricant on moving parts if the manufacturer allows it, as heavy grease attracts dirt.

Operate the shootbolts fully each time rather than forcing a half thrown bolt, and close the master door last so it pulls the set into line. If the multipoint lock on the master leaf feels heavy, our multipoint lock repair page explains the warning signs. Starting prices for related work are on our price list, and every other job we do is on our services page.

Questions and Answers

Usually, yes. The most common cause is a panel that has dropped so the shootbolts or master door hooks miss their keeps. We realign the leaves first, then repair or replace the lock parts only if they have failed.
It depends on the fault and the system, so we quote from photos. A replacement cylinder starts from £20 and general door repair from £79. The price is confirmed before any work begins.
No. We only repair existing bifold doors: rollers, guides, hinges, alignment, shootbolts, handles and locks. For new doors, or glass and frame replacement, you will need a window and door installer.
Dirt in the bottom track is the usual cause, followed by worn rollers or a panel that has dropped and is dragging. Clean the track first. If it is still heavy, the rollers or hinges need attention.
In most cases. We identify the system and fit matching rollers or guides where they are available. A few manufacturers only supply parts to their own installers, and we will tell you if that applies to yours.
Clean the track rather than greasing it. If moving parts need lubrication, use a light silicone spray where the manufacturer allows it, because heavy oil or grease collects grit and wears the rollers faster.
