Need a locksmith in Walkley? We open locked doors, change and repair locks and secure back doors across Walkley and the Upperthorpe edge of S6, 24 hours a day. We usually get to you in 25 to 40 minutes from Broughton Lane, a lockout starts from £59 and a cylinder change from £20, and the price is agreed on the phone before we leave.
Walkley is almost all terraced housing on steep streets, with a mix of long term owners, young families and student lets. That shapes the work: plenty of first week lock changes, old timber doors that stick, and back doors that open onto shared passages.
Walkley grew in the nineteenth century, much of it laid out by freehold land societies, which is why you get long rows of brick terraces climbing the hillside and street names like Freedom Road. The shops along South Road sit on the ridge, and the land falls away steeply towards the Rivelin valley on one side and Upperthorpe on the other.
To get here from our base, we head into town on the Parkway, follow the ring road round to Shalesmoor and climb up through Upperthorpe. Most calls take 25 to 40 minutes; late evenings are quicker, the school run and the morning rush are slower.
Parking on the steepest rows can mean leaving the van a street away, so give us your house number and a landmark such as the nearest corner shop or the library on South Road. If a child, vulnerable person or pet is locked inside, or a bath or hob is running, call 999 first and then ring us.
Walkley front doors have been replaced over the decades in every material going, so the first thing we ask on the phone is what yours is made of. That tells us which lock to expect and what to bring.
| Door | Lock usually fitted | Typical weak point | Sensible upgrade |
|---|---|---|---|
| Original or reproduction timber | Rim nightlatch plus mortice deadlock | Old 2 or 3 lever mortice, worn nightlatch | 5 lever BS3621 mortice, from £75 |
| 1990s or 2000s uPVC | Multipoint lock with euro cylinder | Basic cylinder that can be snapped, worn gearbox | TS007 3 star cylinder |
| Recent composite | Multipoint lock with euro cylinder | Standard cylinder fitted at install | Sold Secure SS312 Diamond cylinder |
On a timber door the nightlatch is what usually catches people out: pull the door shut and it locks, keys or no keys. A double locking nightlatch, from £45, lets you deadlock it from outside so it cannot be slipped. Our Yale and nightlatch replacement page compares the options.
On uPVC and composite doors, ask us to check the cylinder. Many Walkley doors still have the cylinder they were installed with, and our anti-snap lock upgrades are worth considering if yours has no star rating on it.
Houses here change hands and tenants often, and nobody knows how many keys are still out there. If you have just bought or rented, this is how a lock change usually goes:
Front and back, timber or uPVC, and a photo of each lock if you can. That lets us quote a starting price straight away.
We bring cylinders and locks to suit. Euro cylinders start from £20 and rekeying an existing lock from £25.
Front and back cylinders can take the same key, which suits a shared house.
We check each lock throws fully with the door shut, then hand you every new key.
Renting? Check your tenancy agreement first; most say you need the landlord’s permission to change locks and must give them a copy. Landlords can read about our lock changes between tenants.
A lot of Walkley terraces share a passage or ginnel that leads to the back yards, and in some rows anyone can walk along the back of every house. That makes the back door the one to think about, because it is out of sight of the street.
Does the mortice have a BS kitemark on the faceplate? Are there bolts top and bottom? Does the gate to the passage lock? If any answer is no, we can sort it on the same visit as another job.
We fit 5 lever BS3621 sash locks to timber back doors, adjust uPVC back doors so the multipoint engages properly, and replace or add garden and side gate locks on yard gates. If a back door has already been forced, emergency boarding up from £120 keeps the house secure until a proper repair.
On the lower side of the area, around Upperthorpe and Netherthorpe, there are more flats and maisonettes with communal entrances. Flat doors there tend to be fire doors with a closer, so a lockout is often a simple case of the door swinging shut behind you.
If you rent from the council or a housing association, check with them before you change a lock, because the door and lock may be theirs to maintain. If you are locked out and need to get in now, we can open the door, and we will ask for ID or a tenancy document that shows the address.
Starting prices for every job are listed on our price list.
We cover the neighbouring S6 and S10 districts on the same run. Crookes is up the hill to the south with very similar terraces, Hillsborough is down Walkley Lane to the north west, and the city centre is a short drive down through Shalesmoor. The full list is on our Sheffield areas covered page.
These are starting prices for Walkley jobs; we confirm yours on the phone before travelling.
