Lockouts from £59

Starting price agreed on the phone before the van leaves

If you are locked out in Sheffield, we send a mobile locksmith from our base at 45 Broughton Lane S9 who usually reaches you within 25 to 45 minutes and gets you back inside from £59. We work 24 hours a day, start with non-destructive entry and only drill when a lock gives us no other choice, which we explain before touching it.

This page covers what happens from your first call to the moment the door opens, how entry differs between uPVC, composite and timber doors, and what to do if your keys are lost rather than sitting on the kitchen table. For every other job we handle, see our full list of locksmith services.

What happens after you call us locked out in Sheffield

  1. Tell us four things. Your postcode, the type of door (uPVC, composite or wooden), whether it was slammed shut or locked with a key, and whether anyone or anything inside needs urgent help.
  2. Agree the starting price. A standard house lockout starts at £59. Late night, weekend and bank holiday call outs can carry an extra charge, and we tell you that figure on the call, not on the doorstep.
  3. Wait somewhere safe. We give you an honest arrival window, usually 25 to 45 minutes depending on traffic on the Parkway and through the centre, and ring if anything changes.
  4. Show proof you live there. Before any work starts we check ID or proof of address. If your documents are inside, we check them once the door is open and before we leave.
  5. Entry and a final check. We open the door, then test the lock with you so it still secures properly tonight. If something has to be replaced you hear the price before it happens.

Payment is by cash, card or bank transfer once you are back in.

How your door type changes a lockout

The single biggest factor in how long a lockout takes is not the time of night. It is how the door was left. A door pulled shut on the latch behaves very differently from one that was locked with a key on the way out.

uPVC door on the latch

If you lifted the handle and turned the key, the hooks and bolts of the multipoint lock are thrown along the whole edge. If the door simply swung shut behind you, only the latch is holding it.

Latched only: usually a quick, damage free job.

Composite door

Composite doors use the same style of multipoint gear as uPVC but with a thicker, stiffer slab, and many already have an anti snap cylinder fitted.

Expect a little longer; still non-destructive in most cases.

Timber door with a nightlatch

The classic Victorian terrace setup in Walkley, Crookes or Nether Edge. A standard Yale style latch locks itself as the door closes, which is why so many people get caught out.

Often the fastest lockout of all.

Timber door with a mortice deadlock

A five lever deadlock that was locked with its key is designed to resist entry, so this is the case most likely to need the lock replaced afterwards.

Ask us on the phone about a same day lock change if needed.

If you are not sure which lock you have, a photo from a neighbour or a description of the key (flat and serrated, or long with a chunky bit at the end) is enough for us to plan.

Keys locked inside or keys lost: which do you have?

These sound like the same problem but they end differently. Keys sitting on the hall shelf mean your lock is still secure once you are back in. Keys dropped on a night out, or stolen with a bag that also held your address, mean someone else may be able to walk in.

Locked out of a flat, HMO or student house

Shared buildings add a layer. In city centre blocks around Kelham Island, West Bar or the Moor there is often a communal entrance on a fob or code, then your own flat door. We can only work on doors you have the right to open, so if the communal door is managed by a building company we may need you to get through it first, or to call the concierge or out of hours number.

In student houses in Broomhill, Crookes and Walkley, bedroom doors often have their own small locks as well as the front door. A tenant can usually authorise entry to their own room and the shared front door, but anything that means changing a lock should involve the landlord or letting agent. If you are a landlord dealing with tenants who keep losing keys, our landlord locksmith service covers lock changes between tenancies.

Working late in the centre and stuck outside? Our S1 city centre locksmith page covers the flats and communal doors there in more detail.

Why we ask for ID before opening any home

Every locksmith who opens doors without checking is a gift to burglars, so we ask for proof every time. It protects you as much as anyone.

  • A driving licence or other photo ID showing the address
  • A utility bill, council tax letter or bank statement in your name
  • A tenancy agreement or a message from your landlord or agent
  • For a business, written authority from the owner or manager

If everything is inside, tell us when you call. We open the door and then check the paperwork before we go. If something does not add up, we stop and secure the door again.

When to call 999 before calling a locksmith

Emergencies come first

If a child, a vulnerable adult or a pet is shut inside, or a hob, oven or running bath has been left on, call 999 straight away. The emergency services can force entry faster than any locksmith, and safety outweighs the cost of a door. Call us afterwards and we will secure or replace whatever was damaged.

For a car rather than a house, our car lockout service opens vehicles with keys locked inside, from £65. We do not cut, program or replace car keys.

Stopping it happening again

Most lockouts we attend are slam shut nightlatches or a uPVC door pulled closed while the keys sit inside. A few small changes cut the odds a lot: a key safe fitted properly out of sight, a spare with someone who lives nearby, or swapping a standard nightlatch for a double locking Yale style nightlatch that does not lock itself behind you on the way to the bins.

Our guide on how to avoid being locked out of your house goes through the habits and hardware in more depth. We cover the whole city and nearby towns, listed on our areas we cover page.

Questions and Answers

A standard house lockout starts from £59. Evenings, weekends and bank holidays can add a surcharge, and if a lock has to be replaced that is extra, for example a euro cylinder from £20. We tell you the starting price on the phone before we set off.
Across Sheffield we usually arrive in 25 to 45 minutes from our S9 base, depending on traffic and where you are. Areas close to Darnall, Attercliffe and Meadowhall tend to be at the quicker end. We give you a time on the call and ring if it changes.
Not usually. We start with non-destructive entry on every door. Drilling is a last resort, mostly for a mortice deadlock or high security cylinder locked with its key, and we explain why and what it will cost before we do it.
Yes. As a tenant you can ask us to let you back into your own home with your tenancy agreement or proof of address. If a lock needs changing, let your landlord or agent know, and see our landlord locksmith page for how lock changes between tenants work.
Tell us when you call. We open the door and then check your ID or a letter with your name and address before leaving. If we cannot confirm you live there, we secure the door again.
Yes, we work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Late night call outs can cost more than daytime ones, and that difference is agreed before we leave, so there are no surprises when we arrive.
