Five quick fixes to try before you call a locksmith
1. Key stiff or hard to turn
Use a dry PTFE or graphite lock lubricant in the keyway, then work the key in and out a few times. Avoid cooking oil and general purpose oils, which collect grit. If it is still stiff, the cylinder may be worn and our lock repair service can check it.
2. uPVC door will not lock
Lift the handle fully before turning the key, and look for fresh rub marks on the frame, which point to a dropped door. Never force the handle; that is how gearboxes break. If lifting does nothing, see our page on a uPVC door that will not lock.
3. Key snapped in the lock
Do not push the remaining piece further in, do not use superglue and do not try the other half of the key. If part of the blade sticks out, gentle pliers may work. If not, book broken key extraction from £55.
4. Door handle drooping or floppy
On uPVC and composite doors a droopy handle usually means a broken return spring inside the handle, not a failed lock. A matching replacement door handle is a quick job.
5. Window handle spins or will not lock
Check the handle screws under the cover cap are tight. If it still spins, the gearing is worn and our window lock repairs will sort it.

What to tell a locksmith when you ring
A good description on the phone gets you an accurate price and means the right parts arrive with us. Before you call, check these five things:
- Door material: uPVC, composite, timber or aluminium shop front.
- Lock type: a key that goes into a round or pear shaped barrel, a Yale style latch high on the door, or a keyhole for a lever key lower down.
- What changed: did the key stop turning, did the handle stop lifting, or did a key break?
- Who is inside: if anyone vulnerable or any animal is shut in, tell us and ring 999 first.
- Your postcode: so we can give you a realistic time.

Emergencies come first
If a child, a vulnerable person or a pet is locked in a house or car, or a hob or bath is running inside, call 999 before you call a locksmith.
