When you need a locksmith Millhouses residents and businesses can reach at any hour, we cover Abbeydale Road from the Carter Knowle end out past Millhouses Park to Beauchief, along with the streets climbing towards Woodseats. We are a mobile, police approved locksmith working from S9, and we carry cylinders, mortice locks, nightlatches, multipoint mechanisms and window locks so most jobs are done in one visit. Lockouts, lock changes and stiff or failing doors make up most of our calls here, along with a steady run of shop and office work along Abbeydale Road.
Millhouses has a lot of solid Victorian and Edwardian houses, many still with their original heavy front doors and sash windows, alongside 1930s semis near Beauchief and newer flats close to the main road. Each brings different locks. Period doors often have an old mortice and a rim nightlatch that need care to keep the door looking right, while the semis and flats tend to have uPVC or composite doors with euro cylinders. We match the lock to the door, not the other way round.
Getting to Millhouses from our S9 base
From Broughton Lane we head in on the Parkway, round the inner ring road and out along the A621 Abbeydale Road, which runs right through Millhouses. That direct route means arrival is usually inside our normal 25 to 45 minutes across Sheffield, and quiet roads at night help. For Beauchief and the upper streets towards Woodseats we may come via Chesterfield Road instead, depending on traffic. Either way, we tell you an honest arrival time on the phone and keep you posted.
Carter Knowle and the roads off it are mostly residential with tight parking, so if you can tell us where we can stop near your door it saves a few minutes when we arrive. If you are waiting outside on a cold night, a nearby cafe or a neighbour's house is fine, just let us know where to find you.
Victorian and Edwardian doors: keeping the character, improving the security
Many of the larger houses in Millhouses and Carter Knowle still have original timber front doors, some with stained glass panels. These doors were built well, but their locks were not designed for modern standards. A common setup is an old 2 or 3 lever mortice that is rarely used and a rim nightlatch that does all the work. That leaves the door held by a single latch, which is not enough on its own.
We can fit a 5 lever BS3621 mortice lock into the existing case position in most doors, and replace a tired nightlatch with a double locking model so the handle cannot be opened from inside through broken glass. We choose finishes that suit the door where we can, and we take care with old frames, which can split if a keep is forced in.
- Double locking nightlatch from £45
- 5 lever BS3621 mortice from £75
- 3 lever mortice from £40 for secondary doors
- Lock repair from £55 when an old lock is worth saving
Sash windows and older window locks
Original sash windows are part of what makes these streets attractive, but many have only a simple catch in the middle. Sash stops let you keep a window slightly open for air while stopping it being lifted further, and they are a small job to fit. On uPVC windows in newer extensions and flats, worn handles and broken locking cams are the usual faults.
Our window lock repair work starts from £40. We always look at ground floor and easy to reach rear windows first, since those are the ones that matter most, and we will tell you honestly if a window is fine as it is.
Shops, cafes and offices along Abbeydale Road
Abbeydale Road has a long run of independent shops, cafes, salons and small offices, and when a front door lock fails, the business cannot open. We handle commercial locksmith work including lockouts from £60, door closers from £79, panic bars from £65 and lock changes when staff leave. For businesses with several keyholders, a master key system from £110 lets each person open only the doors they need.
We are open 24 hours, so we can come early before opening or late after closing to avoid disrupting trade. Tell us what time suits when you call, and we will agree the price for the whole job before we start.
New movers and rented homes
Millhouses and the streets around Abbeydale Road are popular with people moving across from other parts of the city, and there is a fair amount of rented housing. If you have just moved in, you have no way of knowing how many old keys are still out there. Changing or rekeying the locks is the simple answer. A euro cylinder change starts from £20, and lock rekeying from £25 keeps your existing lock but makes the old keys useless.
Landlords can book changeovers between tenants, and we can key several locks alike so one key opens the front and back doors. We agree a price for the full job before we start.
| Door type | Usual lock | Starting price |
|---|---|---|
| uPVC or composite | Euro cylinder | From £20 |
| Timber front door | Nightlatch and 5 lever mortice | From £20 nightlatch, from £60 mortice |
| Back door on older house | 2 or 3 lever mortice | From £25 |
| Garage or side gate | Padlock or garage lock | From £20 |
Lost keys and snapped keys in Millhouses
If your keys are lost along with anything showing your address, treat it as urgent. We can come out the same day or night, get you in if needed, and change the locks so the lost keys no longer work. Our page on lost keys in Sheffield explains the options in more detail.
If a key snaps in the lock while you are trying to open it, stop turning, because further force can push the broken piece deeper. Broken key extraction starts from £55. If your car keys are locked in the car, we can open it from £65 with proof of ownership, but we do not cut, program or supply car keys or fobs.
