For a locksmith Stocksbridge, Deepcar and the villages up the Don valley can rely on, Sheffield Locksmith 24H covers the whole of S36 around the clock. We are a mobile locksmith based on Broughton Lane in east Sheffield, and we come out to Stocksbridge for lockouts, lock changes, uPVC door faults, snapped keys and security upgrades. Because the town sits right on the north western edge of the city, we always tell you an honest arrival time when you ring rather than a number that sounds good.

Stocksbridge is a long town strung along Manchester Road and the Little Don, with Deepcar at the bottom of the hill and Bolsterstone above. The housing is a real mix: stone terraces built for steelworkers, post war council houses, 1960s to 1980s estates with ageing uPVC doors, and newer homes up the valley sides. Out towards Thurgoland and Bolsterstone there are farmhouses and stone cottages with old mortice locks. We carry stock for all of it, so most jobs are finished on the first visit.

How we get to Stocksbridge, Deepcar and Oughtibridge

From our base near the Parkway and junction 34 we have two good routes into S36. At quieter times the fastest way is usually up the M1 and across on the A616, which brings us down the Stocksbridge bypass and straight into the town or Deepcar. When the motorway is slow we head out along the A61 Penistone Road and follow the A6102 through Middlewood and Oughtibridge, which also suits jobs in Oughtibridge, Wharncliffe Side and the bottom end of Deepcar.

We will always tell you which way we are coming and roughly how long it should take before we set off. For Stocksbridge and the outlying villages that is typically 30 to 50 minutes, depending on the time of day, the weather on the tops and where in the valley you are. If something holds us up on the way we ring you, so you are never left standing on the doorstep wondering. If you are locked out in the cold, tell us, and we will talk you through what to do while you wait.

Old stone cottages, farmhouses and the locks they come with

A lot of the homes around Bolsterstone, Thurgoland and the lanes above Deepcar are older stone properties with thick timber doors. Many still have the original 2 lever mortice lock, sometimes paired with a rim nightlatch that has been on the door for decades. These locks are easy to pick and are not accepted by most home insurers, so it is worth checking what you have.

We can fit a 5 lever BS3621 mortice lock into a period door without spoiling it, cutting the pocket carefully and fitting a new keep in the frame. If the door has warped or the frame has moved with age, we adjust it so the bolt throws cleanly, which also stops the lock wearing out. Where a nightlatch is the main lock, a double locking nightlatch is a sensible upgrade for back doors and side doors. Our page on mortice lock replacement explains the different lever counts in more detail.

Barns, outbuildings and garages often have tired padlocks, hasps and rim locks. We replace padlocks and fit gate and outbuilding locks as part of the same visit if you want everything sorted in one go.

uPVC and composite door problems on the S36 estates

The estates built in Stocksbridge and Deepcar from the 1960s through to the 1980s mostly had their doors replaced with uPVC in the 1990s and 2000s. Those doors are now at the age where the multi point mechanism inside starts to fail. The usual signs are a handle that will not lift, a key that has to be forced to lock, or a door that only locks if you lean on it. Being high up on the valley sides, these homes also take a lot of wind and rain, and doors drop and swell more than in sheltered parts of the city.

Most of the time we can fix the door rather than replace it. We adjust the hinges and keeps, replace the gearbox or the full multi point strip, and fit a new cylinder at the same time. If your door will not lock at all, read our door won't lock guide first, because forcing the handle is the most common way a gearbox snaps. For the full range of repairs see our uPVC locksmith service.

  • Handle floppy or will not lift: usually the gearbox, repair from £40 for multi point locks
  • Key stiff in the lock: often the door has dropped, uPVC door lock repair from £20
  • Lock spins and will not open: cylinder or cam failure, we open it and replace it
  • Draughts and rattles: keeps and hinges adjusted so the door seals properly again

Anti snap cylinders for Stocksbridge homes

Plenty of uPVC and composite doors in S36 still have the standard euro cylinder that came with the door. Those cylinders can be snapped in seconds with basic tools. An anti snap cylinder is designed to break at a sacrificial line so the cam stays protected and the door stays locked. A euro cylinder change starts from £20, and we fit a quality anti snap cylinder sized to your door so it sits flush with the handle.

If you have just moved into one of the newer houses up the valley, or into an older terrace on Manchester Road, it is also worth changing the locks because you cannot know how many keys are out there. We can match every door to one key so the front, back and garage doors all work with the same key. Our article on why anti snap locks are worth it covers the details.

Other locksmith jobs we cover in the upper Don valley

Not every call is a lockout. In Stocksbridge we are often asked to remove a broken key, open a locked safe, sort a garage door lock or open a car that has the keys inside. We open cars only; we do not cut, program or supply car keys or fobs, so if your keys are lost you will need a dealer or an auto locksmith who does key work. If the key has simply snapped in your front door, our broken key extraction service starts from £55 and usually saves the lock.

  • House lockouts and lock changes
  • Window lock installation and repair
  • Garage and gate locks, padlocks
  • Safe opening
  • Car lockouts, opening only
  • Emergency boarding up after a break in
  • Landlord and eviction lock changes

Questions and Answers

Yes. We are open 24 hours, 7 days a week, and Stocksbridge, Deepcar and the S36 villages are part of our normal area. At night the roads are quieter, so the A616 route is often straightforward. We tell you an honest arrival time on the phone, typically 30 to 50 minutes, and ring you if anything changes.
Emergency lockouts start from £59 and a euro cylinder change starts from £20. We do not add extra for Stocksbridge being on the edge of the city. The exact price depends on the door and lock, and we agree it with you on the phone before we leave. You pay once the job is done, by cash, card or bank transfer.
In most lockouts, yes. We always try non destructive entry first, using picking, bypass tools or opening the door through the letterbox where it suits the lock. If a lock is damaged or high security and drilling is the only option, we explain why and agree it with you first. We then fit a new lock on the spot.
If it is a 2 or 3 lever lock it is worth upgrading. Most insurers want a 5 lever BS3621 mortice on final exit timber doors, and older locks are easier to pick. We fit a BS3621 mortice from £75 and adjust the door and keep so the bolt throws cleanly, without spoiling an old door.
Yes. Oughtibridge, Wharncliffe Side, Thurgoland and Bolsterstone are all covered, along with Stocksbridge and Deepcar. These are outlying places, so we give you an honest arrival time when you call, typically 30 to 50 minutes. The starting prices are the same as anywhere else in Sheffield.
No. We do not cut, program or supply car keys or fobs. What we can do is open your car if the keys are locked inside, from £65, once you show proof of ownership. If the keys are lost or broken you will need a main dealer or a specialist who does car key work.
Do not force the handle, as that can snap the gearbox and leave the door stuck open or shut. Ring us and describe what it is doing. Often the door has dropped and the hooks no longer line up. We can adjust it or replace the multi point mechanism, with repairs from £40 for multi point locks.
