If you are searching for a locksmith Stannington homes can call at any hour, we cover the whole village and the valleys around it, from Malin Bridge at the bottom of the hill up through Stannington and along the Loxley Valley towards the Bradfield villages. We are a police approved mobile locksmith based in S9, carrying the locks and parts most homes here need. Lockouts, uPVC doors that will not lock, snapped keys and lock changes are the bulk of our calls, along with garages, outbuildings and gates on the more rural properties.

Stannington is a mix of old and new. The original village has stone cottages and farmhouses with timber doors and old mortice locks, while much of the hillside was built up with private estates from the 1960s to 1980s, many now on their second or third set of uPVC doors. Newer builds add composite doors with multipoint locks. Further out along Loxley Road and towards Bradfield, properties are more spread out, with barns, sheds and field gates that need padlocks and gate locks.

Getting to Stannington from our S9 base

We travel across the north of the city on the ring road to Hillsborough, then through Malin Bridge and up the hill. For Malin Bridge and the lower part of Stannington, arrival is usually within our normal 25 to 45 minutes. The upper village and the estates take a little longer, and for Loxley and the Bradfield road villages we give you an honest time on the phone, typically 30 to 50 minutes.

Stannington is high and exposed, and the lanes beyond the village can be slow in bad weather. If snow or ice is affecting the roads we will say so when you call rather than promise a time we cannot keep. If you are waiting outside, let us know whether you have somewhere warm to wait, such as a neighbour's house, and we will ring when we are close.

uPVC doors on Stannington's 1960s to 1980s estates

Much of Stannington's housing went up between the 1960s and the 1980s, and most of those homes have had their timber doors replaced with uPVC at some point. Many of those replacement doors are now old themselves. The usual faults are a multipoint gearbox that has worn through, a handle that no longer lifts the hooks, or a door that has dropped so the bolts miss their keeps. Our multipoint door lock page goes into detail on these mechanisms.

Most repairs start with adjusting the hinges and keeps, which costs far less than a new mechanism. Where the gearbox has failed we replace it with a matching unit, from £40. While we are there we check the cylinder, and if it is a basic type we can fit an anti snap cylinder to the same handles.

SymptomWhat it usually meansFrom

Stone cottages, farmhouses and older village homes

In the old part of Stannington and out along the lanes, many properties still have solid timber doors with mortice locks, sometimes old enough that spare keys are hard to get. When a lock like this fails we can often repair it, from £55, or replace it with a modern mortice that fits the same opening. For final exit doors, a 5 lever lock made to BS3621, from £75, is the standard most home insurers look for.

Older stone walls and timber frames are rarely square, so we take time setting keeps and strike plates so the bolt throws fully. A bolt that only goes halfway home is a common weakness on cottage doors and easy to miss when you lock up in a hurry.

Garages, sheds, gates and outbuildings

Homes towards Loxley and the Bradfield road often have garages, workshops, stables or field gates as well as the house itself. These are easy targets if they are secured with a cheap padlock or an old garage handle. We replace garage door locks from £20, fit padlocks from £20 and handle gate lock replacement for side gates and drive gates.

If you have lost the key to a garage or outbuilding, we can open it and fit a new lock in the same visit. If you rent more than one garage or have several outbuildings, we can change all the locks in one trip and key them alike if you prefer.

  • Garage door locks from £20
  • Padlocks from £20
  • Gate locks replaced or repaired
  • Bike lock removal when keys are lost

Malin Bridge and the bottom of the hill

Malin Bridge, where the Supertram terminates and the Loxley and Rivelin rivers meet, has more terraced housing and flats than the village above. Here the calls are more often lockouts from flats, snapped keys and lock changes for tenants. Communal doors and mailbox locks in small blocks are also part of the work, and we replace mailbox locks when keys go missing.

If you rent and have lost your keys, check with your landlord or letting agent first, then call us if you need to get in. We will check ID or proof of address before opening the door, as we do on every home.

Cold weather and stiff locks on high ground

Stannington sits well above the city centre and gets colder and wetter than the valley floor. That shows up in locks. Timber doors swell and bind, uPVC doors move with the temperature, and outside locks on gates and garages can seize. If a key starts to feel stiff, do not force it, because that is how keys snap. A little lock lubricant often helps, and if the problem is the door rather than the lock we can adjust it. Our guide to avoiding being locked out has more simple tips.

Yes. We cover Loxley, the Loxley Valley and the villages along the Bradfield road. Because they are further from our S9 base, we confirm an honest arrival time when you call, typically 30 to 50 minutes. Starting prices are on our prices page, and we agree the full price with you on the phone before we set off.
uPVC doors and frames move with temperature, so in cold weather the hooks and bolts can stop lining up with their keeps. If you have to force the handle up, the door has probably dropped or the gearbox is wearing. Do not keep forcing it, as that can break the mechanism. Adjustments start from £20 and gearbox replacements from £40.
Emergency house lockouts start from £59. The final price depends on the type of lock and door and the time of day, and we always agree it with you on the phone before we set off. We try non destructive entry first, and you pay once you are back inside, by cash, card or bank transfer.
Yes. We open garages, sheds and outbuildings when keys are lost, then fit a new lock so you have working keys again. Garage door locks start from £20 and padlocks from £20. For drive gates and side gates, we can repair or replace the lock in the same visit.
In most cases, yes. We can often fit a modern mortice lock into the same opening, which keeps changes to the door to a minimum. A 5 lever BS3621 mortice starts from £75, and a 3 lever from £40 for doors that do not need the insurance standard. If an old lock is worth saving, repairs start from £55.
No to both. We do not cut, program or supply car keys or fobs, and we do not fit key safes. We can open a car with the keys locked inside, from £65, once we have checked proof of ownership. For new car keys, contact your dealer or a car key specialist.
