As a locksmith Grenoside and Wadsley households can call at any hour, we cover the whole north west corner of Sheffield, from the stone cottages along Main Street in Grenoside down through Wadsley and Wadsley Bridge to the estates around Southey Green and the edge of Parson Cross. We are a mobile, police approved service based in S9, so we are already on the road with a van stocked with cylinders, mortice locks, nightlatches and uPVC gearboxes. Most jobs here are lockouts, snapped keys, failing uPVC mechanisms and lock changes after a move or a lost set of keys.

The area is a real mix of housing, and that shapes the work. Older stone properties in Grenoside village and around Wadsley Church often have timber doors with mortice locks and rim nightlatches. The streets near Halifax Road and Penistone Road are mostly terraces and semis, many with uPVC doors fitted twenty or thirty years ago. Around Southey Green the post war council built homes have a mix of original timber and replacement uPVC and composite doors. We carry stock for all of these, so most jobs are finished on the first visit.

How we reach Grenoside and Wadsley from S9

Our base on Broughton Lane sits close to the Parkway and junction 34 of the M1, which puts the north of the city within easy reach. For Wadsley Bridge and Southey Green we usually cross on the outer ring road, and for Grenoside village we head up the A61 Penistone Road and Halifax Road. Typical arrival is 25 to 45 minutes. Grenoside sits higher up the hill than most of the north of the city, so we give you an honest time on the phone rather than a hopeful guess.

If you are stuck outside, tell us where you are waiting and whether anyone vulnerable is with you, such as a young child or an elderly relative. We will keep you updated if anything changes on the way. Once we arrive we confirm who you are, agree the method of entry and get you back inside with as little fuss as possible.

Locks on older stone homes in Grenoside village

Grenoside grew as a village long before Sheffield reached it, and many older houses around the village centre and up towards Grenoside Woods still have heavy timber doors. These usually rely on a mortice lock with a rim nightlatch above it. A worn 2 lever mortice will not meet most home insurance wording, which normally asks for a 5 lever lock made to BS3621 on the final exit door. We can fit a BS3621 mortice lock into the existing pocket in most doors, and we check the keep and the frame while we are there.

Old timber doors move with the seasons, so a lock that turned easily in summer can bind by winter. Before replacing anything we check whether the problem is the lock itself or the door dropping on its hinges, because a small adjustment often saves the cost of new parts.

  • 5 lever BS3621 mortice from £75
  • Standard nightlatch from £20, double locking nightlatch from £45
  • Rim cylinder change from £20
  • Lock repair from £55 where parts are still available

uPVC and composite door faults around Wadsley and Wadsley Bridge

A large share of calls from Wadsley and the streets off Halifax Road are uPVC doors that will not lock, or handles that drop and spin. On an ageing door the cause is usually the multipoint gearbox inside the door edge, or hooks that no longer meet their keeps. If you have to lift the handle harder than usual, or the key is getting stiff, it is worth calling before it fails completely and leaves you on the wrong side of it.

Many of these doors still carry the basic euro cylinder they were fitted with, which can be snapped by a burglar in seconds. Swapping to an anti snap cylinder is one of the simplest upgrades we do, usually under half an hour, and it fits the same handles.

Southey Green and the Parson Cross edge: lock changes and lettings

Around Southey Green and the edge of Parson Cross there are a lot of rented homes, both council and private. We change locks for tenants who have lost keys, for landlords between tenancies and for anyone who has moved in and does not know how many keys are out there. For private landlords we can key several doors alike, or rekey existing locks from £25 so new keys work and old ones do not. Our landlord locksmith service has more detail on changeovers and evictions.

If you rent from the council, check your tenancy terms before changing locks, as some repairs are handled by the housing repairs team. Where you are allowed to change them yourself, or the job cannot wait, we will do it and talk you through what we have fitted.

After a break in or attempted entry

If someone has forced a door or window, call the police first and get a crime reference number. We can then secure the property, replace a damaged cylinder or lock, and board up a broken pane or panel until a glazier or door fitter can replace it. Emergency boarding up starts from £120, and lock changes from £20 for a standard euro cylinder.

Once the property is safe we will point out any weak spots we noticed, such as a back door with only a nightlatch or ground floor windows without locks. We only suggest work that makes a real difference, and nothing is done without your agreement.

  • Damaged cylinders and locks replaced on the night
  • Window locks fitted or repaired from £40
  • Door repair from £79 where the frame or panel has been forced

Other locksmith work we do in S35 and S6

Beyond house doors, we open locked cars (opening only, as we do not cut, program or supply car keys or fobs), open safes, change mailbox locks in blocks of flats, replace garage and gate locks and remove bike locks when keys are lost. Small businesses on Halifax Road and Penistone Road can call us for commercial lockouts, door closers and panic bars. We do not fit key safes, and on bifold doors we carry out repairs only.

Questions and Answers

Usually within 25 to 45 minutes. We are based in S9 near the Parkway and travel up the A61 or across the outer ring road. Grenoside sits at the top of the hill, so it can be toward the later end of that range. We always give you an honest arrival time on the phone and update you if anything changes.
Emergency house lockouts start from £59. The final price depends on the door, the lock and the time of day, and we agree it with you on the phone before we set off. You pay once the door is open and you are happy, by cash, card or bank transfer. If a lock needs replacing after entry, we price that first.
We always try non destructive entry first, and most domestic doors open without any damage. If a lock is high security or faulty and drilling is the only way in, we explain why and agree it with you before we start. A drilled cylinder can usually be replaced on the spot from the van, from £20 for a standard euro cylinder.
Yes. As a police approved locksmith we check ID or proof of address before opening any home. A driving licence, a utility bill, a bank letter or a tenancy agreement usually works. If your documents are inside, we can check them once the door is open while we are still there. It protects you as much as anyone.
We can, but check your tenancy terms first, because some council tenancies expect the housing repairs team to deal with locks. If you are allowed to change them, or it is urgent after a break in or lost keys, we can fit a new euro cylinder from £20 or a 2 lever mortice from £25.
No. We do not cut, program or supply car keys or fobs. What we can do is open a car if your keys are locked inside, from £65, after checking proof of ownership. If you have lost the keys altogether you will need a dealer or a car key specialist to supply a new one.
Many home insurance policies ask for a 5 lever mortice lock made to BS3621 on timber final exit doors, and plenty of older doors in Grenoside and Wadsley still have 2 or 3 lever locks. Check your policy wording. We fit 5 lever BS3621 mortice locks from £75 and can usually use the existing opening in the door.
