Shed and garage locks

Better padlocks and hasps where bikes and tools are kept

Our home security service in Sheffield focuses on practical, physical upgrades: door chains and limiters, letterbox guards, door viewers, hinge bolts, sash window locks and stronger shed and garage locks, with a home security survey from £65 and padlocks from £20. A locksmith is usually with you in 25 to 45 minutes, and every price is agreed before work starts.

Most burglaries happen through an ordinary door or window, so modest hardware in the right place often achieves more than expensive gadgets. Below is how we decide what to fit first.

Start with a home security survey

A survey, from £65, means a locksmith walks round the whole property with you rather than looking at one lock. We check front, back and side doors, ground floor and easily reached windows, the garage, the shed and any side gate, and look at how someone could get in unseen.

You get a plain list of what we found, ranked by risk, with a price for anything we can fit. There is no obligation to have it all done at once. Many people do the top two or three items the same day and plan the rest. Items without a fixed starting price, such as door chains or letterbox cages, are quoted from a photo or on the visit before anything is fitted.

Door chains, door limiters and viewers

These three items deal with the moment you open the door to someone you do not know.

Door chain

The traditional option. Fitted with long screws into solid timber, it lets the door open a few inches. A chain on short screws into a soft frame offers little resistance, so fixing matters more than the chain itself.

Door limiter

A solid arm instead of a chain, usually stronger and easier for people with arthritis to use. Versions are made for uPVC and composite doors as well as timber.

Door viewer

A wide angle spyhole so you can see who is there without opening up. Useful on solid doors with no glass, and at a lower height for wheelchair users if needed.

For older relatives living alone, a limiter plus a viewer is often the most valuable change we make, because it removes the pressure to open the door to doorstep callers.

Letterbox guards and cages: stopping letterbox fishing

Letterbox fishing is when someone reaches through the letterbox with a hand or tool to grab keys left on a hall table or to work the inside handle. Car keys are a frequent target, because a car on the drive is worth far more than anything near the door.

  • Letterbox guard or cowl. A shaped metal shield fitted inside the door that blocks reaching up or sideways while still letting post through.
  • Letterbox cage. A box that catches post, so nothing can reach past it at all.
  • Move the keys. Keep all keys out of sight and out of reach of the door, which costs nothing.

Thumbturn cylinders deserve special care: if a thumbturn can be reached through the letterbox, fit a guard. Our euro cylinder replacement page explains when a thumbturn is a good idea. For flats with communal post boxes, see our mailbox lock replacement service.

Hinge bolts and the strength of the door itself

Hinge bolts are short steel pins fitted to the hinge edge of a timber door that drop into holes in the frame when the door shuts. They help most on outward opening doors, where the hinge pins are on the outside, and on older doors where the hinge side has never been reinforced. A pair is usually enough.

On timber front doors the main lock matters too. If the deadlock is not a 5 lever BS3621 model, upgrading it from £75 is often the single best step; our mortice lock replacement page explains the standard. On uPVC and composite doors, the equivalent move is a rated cylinder, covered on our anti snap locks page.

Sash window locks and other window security

Ground floor windows and those reached from a flat roof, wall or bin store are the ones to look at. Sheffield still has many Victorian and Edwardian sash windows, especially in older terraces and villas, and the central catch on these is easy to slip. Sash stops or dual screws fitted to the frames hold the sashes together and can allow a small ventilation gap.

Window lock installation or repair starts from £40. For uPVC handles, cockspur fasteners and restrictors, our window lock repair service goes into detail.

Shed locks, garage locks and bike theft

Bikes, tools and garden equipment are stolen from outbuildings far more often than people expect, and a shed often holds the tools a burglar would need for the house. The usual weakness is not the padlock but what it is fixed to.

  • Hasp and staple. Choose one with hidden fixings, bolted through the door rather than screwed into thin boards.
  • Padlock. A closed or shrouded shackle padlock is harder to attack. Padlocks start from £20 and combination padlocks from £35.
  • Ground anchor. For bikes, a ground or wall anchor inside the shed or garage adds a second layer.
  • Garage doors. Up and over doors can be fitted with extra locking; garage door locks start from £20. See our garage door repair page.

Side gates giving access to the back of the house matter too; our gate lock replacement service covers them.

Questions and Answers

Our security assessment starts from £65. A locksmith checks every door, window and outbuilding and gives you a ranked list of upgrades with prices, so you can choose what to do and when.
A limiter is usually stronger and easier to use because it is a solid arm rather than a chain. Either one is only as good as its fixings, so it must be screwed into solid timber or the correct reinforcement on a uPVC door.
It is reaching through a letterbox to grab keys or work the inside handle. A letterbox guard or cage blocks it, and keeping all keys away from the door removes the reason to try. Take extra care if you have a thumbturn lock near the letterbox.
A closed shackle padlock on a strong hasp with hidden fixings, bolted through the door. For bikes, add a ground or wall anchor inside. Thin screws into soft shed boards are the usual weak point, not the padlock.
Yes, on timber doors, and especially outward opening ones. They lock the hinge edge into the frame so the door cannot be levered off its hinges. A pair is usually enough for a standard door.
Start with the doors: a BS3621 deadlock on timber doors or anti snap cylinders on uPVC and composite doors. Then deal with letterboxes, accessible windows and outbuildings. A survey ranks this for your specific house.
