We provide smart lock installation in Sheffield from £110, fitting keypad, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and fingerprint locks to uPVC, composite and timber doors, usually with a locksmith on site within 25 to 45 minutes. Depending on the type, fitting costs from £110 to £140, and we confirm which lock suits your door and the starting price on the phone before we come out.

Smart locks are convenient, but not every model suits every door. Here is what to check before you buy one, and what we do when one stops working.

Keypad, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi or fingerprint: the main options

Keypad locks

Enter a code on the outside panel. Simple, no phone needed, and codes can be given to cleaners or family and deleted later. Good for people who do not want an app.

Bluetooth smart locks

Your phone talks to the lock when you are close. No home network required, but no remote control either unless you add a bridge or hub.

Wi-Fi smart locks

Connect to your router directly or through a bridge, so you can check and open the door from anywhere and get alerts. They rely on your broadband and use more battery.

Fingerprint locks

A reader on the outside stores several fingerprints. Handy for children and older relatives, though cold or wet fingers can slow them down on a Sheffield winter morning.

Many locks mix these: a keypad with Bluetooth, or a fingerprint reader with an app. Decide first how you want to get in on a normal day, then choose the features.

Retrofit smart lock or full replacement?

There are two broad ways to make a door smart, and they suit different situations.

Retrofit unit

A motorised unit clamps over the inside of your existing euro cylinder and turns it for you. The outside of the door looks unchanged and your key still works. Nuki is one well known example of this style.

Least disruptive; usually needs a cylinder with an emergency function so it works with a key left inside.

Full replacement

The cylinder or the handle set is replaced with a smart version that has its own keypad or reader. Yale and several other brands make options for uPVC and composite doors.

Neater and often stronger, but more depends on matching your exact door hardware.

We do not promise that a specific model will fit until we have seen the door, its cylinder size and its handles. A photo of the inside and edge of the door before you order saves buying the wrong product.

Will a smart lock work on a uPVC multipoint door?

This is the question most people get caught out by. On a typical uPVC or composite door, you lift the handle to throw the hooks and bolts, then turn the key to hold them. Most smart locks only turn the key part. So the door is only fully locked if someone has lifted the handle first.

Some doors have an automatic multipoint mechanism that throws the bolts as the door shuts, and these pair well with smart locks. On a standard mechanism, it simply becomes a habit to lift the handle before locking from the app. If your door is already hard to lift or lock, fix that first, because a motor will struggle where a hand struggles. Our uPVC lock repairs and composite door repair pages cover that work.

Timber doors with a nightlatch can take some smart latches directly, while a mortice deadlock usually needs a different approach.

Batteries, backup keys and not getting locked out

Every smart lock runs on batteries, usually AA cells or a rechargeable pack. Most give weeks of low battery warnings in the app or on the keypad. Some keypads have a terminal for emergency power from outside. Even so, we always want a mechanical way in.

  • Keep a physical key. Store it somewhere sensible, not in a plant pot by the door.
  • Keep the cylinder rated. The key backup should still be a TS007 3 star or equivalent cylinder; see our anti snap cylinders.
  • Change batteries on a schedule. Do it twice a year rather than waiting for the warning.
  • Share access digitally. Give a trusted person app access in case your phone is lost.

If it does go wrong and you are stuck outside, our emergency lockout service gets you back in, starting from £59. Our guide on how to avoid being locked out has more everyday habits.

Smart locks and home insurance

Before you fit a smart lock, read the security section of your home insurance policy. Some insurers specify key operated locks to a named standard on final exit doors, and they may not recognise a keypad or app lock unless it carries a relevant rating. Many smart cylinders and handle sets now advertise TS007 or Sold Secure ratings, so ask for the paperwork.

Where a policy is strict, a sensible approach is to keep the rated key cylinder as the main lock and treat the smart device as convenience on top. If in doubt, call your insurer before you buy.

Keypad door locks for landlords, Airbnbs and holiday lets

Code and app locks are popular with landlords and short let hosts because there are no keys to post or collect. Each guest or contractor can get a time limited code, and the access log shows when the door was used. That avoids a lock change every time a key does not come back.

For shared houses, think about who controls the codes and how tenants get in during a power or Wi-Fi failure. Fire safety rules for shared housing may also affect how a door must open from inside, so check your licence conditions. Our landlord locksmith service can advise on the wider set of locks, and businesses needing several doors should see our commercial locksmith page, which covers access control and keyless entry.

Smart lock and keypad lock repair

We also repair faulty smart and keypad locks, whether we fitted them or not. Common faults include:

FaultUsual cause
Motor whirs but the lock does not turnUnit slipped on the cylinder, or door binding on the keeps
Keypad dead or flashingFlat or poorly seated batteries, corroded contacts
App cannot find the lockLost pairing, bridge offline or firmware issue
Fingerprint rejectedDirty sensor or worn stored prints needing re-enrolment
Key will not turn in the backup cylinderRetrofit unit fitted to an unsuitable cylinder

Often the fix is mechanical: realigning the door so the bolts move freely, or fitting the right euro cylinder for the unit. Pricing for all our work is on the locksmith prices page, and more jobs are listed on our services overview.

Questions and Answers

Our digital and smart lock installation starts from £110, with most types between £110 and £140 depending on the lock and the door. We confirm the starting price and whether the lock is included before we attend.
Yes, in most cases. The lock must suit your cylinder size and handle layout, and on a standard multipoint door you still lift the handle before locking. A door with an automatic multipoint mechanism works best with a smart lock.
Most locks warn you for weeks beforehand. If it does run flat, you can use the backup key, and some keypads accept emergency power from outside. That is why we always leave a working key cylinder in the door.
A good keypad lock fitted to a sound door is secure. The weak points are usually codes that are never changed, a poor cylinder used as the backup, or a door that does not lock fully. Change codes when people move out and keep a rated cylinder.
They can. Some policies require a key operated lock to a named standard on exit doors. Check your policy wording and ask the lock maker for its test certificates before buying.
Yes. We check the batteries and contacts, the door alignment and the cylinder before blaming the electronics. Many faults are mechanical, such as a door that binds or a unit that has slipped, and are fixed on the spot.
