Sheffield Locksmith 24H is the locksmith Crosspool residents can call any hour of the day or night, covering Sandygate, Lydgate and the whole Manchester Road corridor in S10. We come out for lockouts, lock changes, BS3621 mortice upgrades, uPVC door repairs, window locks and snapped keys. Everything is priced on the phone before we leave our base in east Sheffield, and you pay once the work is finished.
Crosspool sits on the ridge west of Broomhill, with Manchester Road running through the middle towards the Peak District. Most homes are 1930s semis and detached houses, with some older stone houses and Edwardian properties nearer the Crookes side and newer homes on the outer edge. Many still have their original timber doors, often fitted with locks that have been there for decades. Those doors deserve a careful locksmith rather than a quick drill job.
Getting to Crosspool from our east Sheffield base
We are based on Broughton Lane in S9, so Crosspool is on the opposite side of the city. Depending on the time of day we come in along the Parkway and round the inner ring road before heading out on the A57 through Broomhill and up Manchester Road, or we cut across the north side via Penistone Road and Walkley when the centre is busy. Across Sheffield we usually arrive within 25 to 45 minutes, and we tell you a realistic time for your street when you ring.
Late at night and early in the morning the run across the city is straightforward. During school run times around Tapton and the streets off Sandygate it can be slower, so we will be honest about that when you call.
Locks on 1930s semis and older timber doors
A typical Crosspool semi has a timber front door with a rim nightlatch and a mortice lock, and a back or side door into the garden. Over time those nightlatches loosen, the latch stops catching, and the mortice lock becomes stiff or is simply never used. If the mortice is a 2 or 3 lever lock, it is unlikely to meet what most home insurers ask for on a final exit door.
We replace old mortice locks with a 5 lever BS3621 mortice lock from £75, cutting out the pocket neatly so the door keeps its character. Where the nightlatch is the lock you actually use every day, a double locking nightlatch from £45 is a good upgrade because it cannot be opened from inside without the key once deadlocked. Many people in S10 like to keep original doors, and we work with that rather than suggesting a new door. Our lock replacement service covers every type we fit.
If the door itself is sticking, dropping or has a split around the lock, we can often repair it. Our door repairs start from £79.
uPVC and composite doors along the Manchester Road corridor
Plenty of Crosspool homes have had their original doors replaced with uPVC or composite over the last twenty or thirty years. Those doors use multi point locks, and the common problems are a handle that has gone floppy, a key that turns but does not lock, or a door that has to be slammed or lifted to lock. Homes up on the higher ground towards Lydgate and Sandygate catch the weather, and doors can swell and drop more than you might expect.
We repair uPVC door locks from £20, replace multi point mechanisms from £40, and fit anti snap euro cylinders from £120 at the same time. If you also have a composite door that has warped or will not close cleanly, our composite door repair page explains what can be done.
- Handle drops or will not lift to lock
- Key turns but the door stays unlocked
- Door has to be lifted or pushed hard to lock
- Cylinder is the original standard one, not anti snap
Rented houses near the universities
Crosspool is close to Broomhill and Crookes, and some of the larger houses on and off Manchester Road are let to students and young professionals. Landlords call us to change cylinders between tenancies, fit locks to individual room doors and repair window locks before a new group moves in. We can key the front and back doors alike, and for larger houses a small master key system from £110 lets the landlord carry one key while each tenant only opens their own room.
Our landlord locksmith service covers tenancy changes, and if a tenant has simply lost their keys we can help them get back in and change the lock the same visit.
Window locks and simple security upgrades
Ground floor windows and back doors are where many homes are weakest. Older uPVC windows in Crosspool often have handles that no longer lock or keys that were lost years ago. We repair or replace window locks from £40, and we can fit locking handles so every opening window on the ground floor can be properly secured.
We are happy to walk round the house and point out the weak spots, then give you a price for the work you want. There is no pressure to do everything at once. See our window lock repair page and our wider home security upgrades for ideas.
