Ranmoor's Victorian villas and the locks on their doors
Ranmoor grew in the second half of the nineteenth century as Sheffield's steel and cutlery owners built large stone houses on the slopes west of the town, away from the smoke. Many of those villas still stand along Ranmoor Road, Graham Road and the streets around St John's church, whose spire you can see from across the valley.
Their front doors are usually tall, heavy hardwood with glazed panels, hung on hinges that have carried that weight for a long time. The locks we see most are:
- An old rim nightlatch, sometimes with a handsome brass case but a worn mechanism.
- A 2 or 3 lever mortice that falls short of the BS3621 standard most insurers now ask for.
- Occasionally an original box lock on an inner or rear door.

Remember that a villa rarely has just one way in. Kitchen doors at the back, cellar doors, French doors onto the garden and old coach house doors all need the same attention as the front. Sash windows and other period windows: what we fit
Original timber sash windows are one of the most attractive features of Ranmoor houses and one of the easiest ways in. The central catch on most sashes can be slipped by someone who knows how, so adding locks is worthwhile on any reachable window.

Our route to Ranmoor and the streets we cover
Ranmoor is on the opposite side of Sheffield from our base, so allow time. From Broughton Lane we take the Sheffield Parkway, cross the city on the inner ring road, then head out through Broomhill on Fulwood Road. Overnight that is usually about 30 minutes. In the morning rush, or when traffic around the hospitals and university is heavy, it can take up to 45.

- Check every door and window, without forcing. A back door left on the latch is common in big houses with several entrances.
- If someone vulnerable is inside, call 999 first. That includes a child, someone unwell, or a bath or cooker left running.
