This side of Sheffield is mostly interwar semis, Edwardian terraces near the Woodseats shops and bungalows towards Norton and Meadowhead. Front doors, side doors, garages and rear French doors all turn up in a typical week. Here is how we approach each one, what it costs and how long we take. Other neighbourhoods are on our Sheffield locations page.
We also have a page for nearby locksmith Gleadless, locksmith Millhouses, with local detail and the same starting prices.
Heading south on the A61 we also cover locksmith Chesterfield.
Norton Lees, Woodseats and Meadowhead in one patch
These districts run into each other along the A61, between Meersbrook to the north and the Meadowhead roundabout to the south, with Graves Park in the middle.
The Woodseats shops on Chesterfield Road and the edges of Graves Park are the landmarks most people give us. North of Norton Lees Lane, the Heeley and Meersbrook locksmith page takes over; west towards Beauchief and Abbeydale, the Nether Edge locksmith and Dore locksmith pages cover those streets.
Two ways we reach S8 from our S9 base
Norton Lees is roughly six to seven miles from 45 Broughton Lane, S9 2DF, and we choose between two routes depending on traffic.
Through the city
Along the Parkway, round the inner ring road and out on Queens Road and Chesterfield Road through Heeley and Woodseats. Best late at night and early in the morning.
Round the outer ring road
Up Prince of Wales Road to Manor Top and round through Gleadless to the Bochum Parkway, which brings us out near Meadowhead. Useful when the city centre or Chesterfield Road is congested.
Either way we usually arrive in 25 to 40 minutes. School traffic around Woodseats and Meadowhead is the main thing that pushes us towards the top of that range, and we ring ahead if we are delayed.
Interwar semis: why the side door matters
Most 1920s and 1930s semis in Norton Lees and Woodseats were built with a front door, a side or kitchen door down the passage and a back door or French doors to the garden. Over the years many owners have replaced some of these with uPVC and kept others in timber, so one house can have three different lock types.
The side door is often the forgotten one. It sits in a passage hidden from the road, it is used every day for bins and bikes, and it frequently has the oldest lock in the house. When we survey a semi, that is the first door we look at.
| Door | Typical lock we find | What we recommend |
|---|---|---|
| Front, timber | Nightlatch plus a 2 or 3 lever mortice | 5 lever BS3621 mortice, from £75 |
| Front, uPVC or composite | Multipoint lock with a basic Euro cylinder | Anti-snap cylinder, from £20 for a standard swap |
| Side or kitchen door | Old sashlock or bolts only | Proper deadlock or new cylinder |
| French doors | Multipoint or shootbolts, often worn | French door lock repair |
Garages, driveways and back gates near Graves Park
Many S8 semis and bungalows have a garage at the end of the drive and a side gate between house and garage. Up-and-over garage doors with worn handles and cables are a regular call, and garage door locks start from £20. Our garage door repair page explains what we can fix.
Houses that back onto green space or a shared path should treat the back gate as a front door. A keyed gate lock or a good closed-shackle padlock, from £20, stops people walking straight to the back of the house. See garden gate locks for the options we fit.
Woodseats terraces and the shops on Chesterfield Road
Closer to the Woodseats shops, the housing changes to Edwardian brick terraces with small front gardens and bay windows. These houses usually have a timber or uPVC front door at the top of a short path and a back door onto a yard. Lockouts here are mostly nightlatches that have closed behind someone, and many of the old latches are worth upgrading to a double locking nightlatch, from £45.
Chesterfield Road itself is lined with independent shops, takeaways and cafés. For those, we handle shopfront locks, shutter locks and door closers. A commercial lockout starts from £60 and door closer work from £79, and we ask for proof that you hold the lease or keys before opening a business door. Our commercial locksmith service has the detail for shop owners.
Locksmith Norton Lees for bungalows and easier access
Towards Norton and Meadowhead there are streets of bungalows, and the jobs there are often about making doors easier to use as well as secure.
- Stiff keys and handles: a uPVC door that needs a hard lift to lock is tiring to use every day. Realigning the door and servicing or replacing the gearbox makes it smooth again; see uPVC lock repair from £20.
- Thumbturn cylinders: a cylinder with a turn on the inside means no hunting for a key to get out in an emergency.
- Keyless access: a digital or smart lock, from £110 to £140 depending on type, lets family members or carers get in without spare keys being passed around.
Worried about a relative who cannot open the door?
If someone inside may be unwell or has fallen and cannot reach the door, call 999 first. The emergency services will gain entry, and we can make the door secure afterwards.
