Our locksmith Barnsley service covers the whole borough from our base at 45 Broughton Lane, Sheffield S9, 24 hours a day. We usually reach Barnsley town centre in 25 to 40 minutes by the M1, and house lockouts start from £59, with the price agreed before we set off.
We are a Sheffield business that travels north, and we say so plainly. Once we are with you, we open locked doors without damage wherever possible, replace worn cylinders and nightlatches, repair uPVC and timber doors and secure homes after a break in, from the old pit villages to stone cottages around Penistone.
Closer to the city, Stocksbridge and Deepcar have their own page, as do Wakefield and Doncaster.
Our route up the M1 to Barnsley
From Broughton Lane we join the M1 at junction 34 by Meadowhall and head north. Junction 36 drops us onto the A61 for Hoyland, Birdwell, Worsbrough and the south side of town. Junction 37 is the turn for the Dodworth Road, the hospital side of Barnsley and the road west towards Penistone. For Royston, Darton and Mapplewell we sometimes carry on to junction 38.
That makes Barnsley one of our quicker towns, but it is still a motorway journey, so the times below are honest usual ranges rather than promises.
| Area | Usual arrival from S9 |
|---|---|
| Town centre, Kingstone, Worsbrough | 25 to 40 minutes |
| Hoyland, Birdwell, Elsecar, Wombwell | 25 to 40 minutes |
| Dodworth, Gawber, Pogmoor, Monk Bretton | 30 to 45 minutes |
| Darton, Mapplewell, Royston, Cudworth | 35 to 50 minutes |
| Penistone, Grimethorpe, Goldthorpe | 35 to 55 minutes |
An accident or overnight closure between junctions 35 and 37 is the main thing that pushes those times out. If the motorway is shut we use the A61 through Chapeltown instead, and we tell you the new time.
Barnsley areas we cover, S70 to S75 and Penistone
The Barnsley postcodes run from S70 around the town centre to S75 on the north west side, with Penistone on S36 up towards the moors. We cover all of them.
When you ring, a nearby landmark helps us find you quickly, especially at night in the villages where street names repeat. Callers often give us Barnsley Hospital on Gawber Road, Oakwell, the Interchange, the Glass Works and market in the town centre, Elsecar Heritage Centre or the Penistone road out past Dodworth. In the terraced villages, telling us whether your door is at the front or reached through a back yard or ginnel saves time too, because the house number on the street is not always the door you use.
If you are on the Sheffield edge of the borough, our Chapeltown and High Green locksmith page covers the villages just south of Hoyland. To the east, Rotherham is next door, and to the north we also travel on to Wakefield. Every area is listed on our South Yorkshire coverage page.
Pit terraces, stone cottages and new estates: Barnsley doors
Barnsley grew on coal, and that shapes the homes we work on. A few patterns come up again and again.
Former mining terraces
Wombwell, Hoyland, Grimethorpe, Goldthorpe and Cudworth have long rows of brick terraces and later council semis. Most now have uPVC front doors, many with the original euro cylinder and a multipoint mechanism that has done twenty years or more. A handle that has gone stiff is often a gearbox close to failing, and replacing it before it jams shut is cheaper than an emergency call.
Stone houses in the west
Around Penistone and the villages on the edge of the moors, older stone cottages often keep a solid timber front door with a rim nightlatch and a mortice. Timber doors swell in a wet winter and the latch stops lining up. These are good candidates for a British Standard BS3621 mortice deadlock if the insurer asks for one.
Newer estates near the motorway
Plenty of new housing has gone up near the M1 junctions, typically with composite doors and multipoint locks. Early faults are usually alignment, where the door has moved slightly and the key will not turn once the handle is lifted.
What a locksmith in Barnsley gets called for
Here are the jobs we get asked to do most in Barnsley, with the starting prices from our published price list:
- House lockouts where the door has been pulled to with the keys inside, from £59.
- uPVC doors that will not lock, usually a dropped door or tired gearbox, from £20, or from £40 for a new multipoint lock. Our door will not lock page walks through the causes.
- Nightlatch replacement on timber doors, with a standard nightlatch from £20 and a double locking nightlatch from £45.
- Lock changes after moving in, from £20 per euro cylinder.
- Snapped keys removed from the cylinder, from £55.
- Garden and side gate locks on terraces with shared ginnels, covered on our gate lock replacement page.
Cold mornings and stiff locks
On the higher ground towards Penistone, frost and damp make stiff locks worse. Never force a key that will not turn. That is how most snapped keys happen. Lift the handle fully, push the door into the frame and try again gently, and if it still will not turn, ring us before the key breaks.
Emergency lockout in Barnsley: check these before you ring
A 24 hour locksmith in Barnsley is the answer when every other door is shut, but a few quick checks can save you the call out.
- Try every door and window. Back doors and patio doors are often left on the latch.
- Think about who holds a spare. Family, a neighbour, a landlord or letting agent. Barnsley families are often spread across the same few villages, so a spare may be ten minutes away.
- Check whether the door is deadlocked. A door pulled shut on a nightlatch is usually quicker to open than one locked with a key.
- Ring us with the details. We give you a price and a time from Sheffield, and check ID or proof of address when we arrive.
If a child or vulnerable person is inside, or something is cooking or running, call 999 first. For ways to stop it happening again, see our guide on avoiding being locked out.
Better locks for Barnsley front and back doors
Many lock changes in Barnsley are not emergencies at all. People move into an older terrace, notice the back door has a lock that looks fifty years old and want it sorted. Changing a 2 lever mortice for a 5 lever BS3621 mortice starts from £75, and a TS007 3 star anti snap euro cylinder for a uPVC door from £20 plus the cylinder.
For timber front doors, the Yale and nightlatch replacement page compares a standard nightlatch with a British Standard one. If your home insurance names a particular standard, read the policy wording before we visit so we fit the right lock first time.
After a burglary in Barnsley
If someone has forced a door or broken a window, call the police first and get a crime reference number. Then ring us. Emergency boarding up starts from £120, and we can board a broken glass panel, a back door or a ground floor window so the house is secure overnight.
Where a cylinder has been snapped or a lock forced, we replace it on the same visit where we can, and burglary repairs start from £69. On a terrace with a back yard and a shared ginnel, it is also worth looking at the gate and the back door together, because that is often how people get in unseen. More detail is on our emergency boarding up page.
Barnsley landlords, shops and business units
There is a lot of rented housing in the former mining villages, and landlords often need several properties rekeyed after tenants move on. Lock rekeying starts from £25 and euro cylinders from £20, and we can key a front and back door alike. Our landlord locksmith page explains how we work with letting agents and empty properties.
For businesses, from town centre shops near the market to units off the motorway junctions, our commercial locksmith service covers shutter locks, door closers from £79, push bar exits and master key systems from £110. Commercial lockouts start from £60.
