Our gate lock replacement Sheffield service fits and replaces locks on garden gates, side gates and yard gates, from simple padbolts to keyed and keypad gate locks, with a mobile locksmith usually reaching you in 25 to 45 minutes. Gate locks are quoted from a photo because gates vary so much, while padlocks start from £20 and euro or rim cylinders from £20.

Gates matter more than people think. A side gate that anyone can open lets a burglar work on your back door or patio out of sight of the street, so it is worth getting right.

Why a garden or side gate lock is worth doing properly

Front doors face the street, so they are seen. Back doors, patio doors and kitchen windows usually are not. A side gate or the gate onto a shared ginnel is often the only barrier between the road and the rear of the house, which is why it is commonly listed among the first things to check in home security advice.

A good gate lock does three things. It stops the gate being opened from outside without a key or code, it cannot be reached and released by putting an arm over the top, and it still lets you get out quickly from the garden side. We look at all three before recommending anything.

Once the gate is sorted, the doors it protects matter too. Rear uPVC doors with basic cylinders are a common weak point, explained on our anti snap locks Sheffield page.

For most side gates we recommend a keyed or keypad lock that can be opened from the garden side by hand, plus a bolt for nights or holidays.

Keypad gate locks: when code entry makes sense

A keypad gate lock replaces the key with a short code. It suits households where several people come and go through the back, such as teenagers, a carer, a dog walker or a cleaner, and it removes the problem of a gate key going missing.

  • Mechanical keypads need no batteries or wiring, which matters on a gate that stands out in a Sheffield winter.
  • Double sided versions need a code from both sides, useful on shared passages.
  • Code changes are straightforward, so you can give a tradesperson a temporary code and change it afterwards.

Keypad gate locks are quoted from a photo because the right model depends on the gate thickness and frame. If you are weighing up code locks for your front door too, our guide on how to avoid being locked out sets out the pros and cons of keyless options.

Timber gates and metal gates need different locks

Timber gates

Boarded and framed gates take surface mounted locks and bolts fixed with coach bolts through the frame, not short wood screws that can be levered out. The post must be sound; a rotten post will not hold any lock.

Check the post and the gate sag before choosing the lock.

Metal gates

Box section and tubular steel gates need a lock made for metal frames, usually a box lock that bolts through the section, with a matching keep on the post. Wrought iron railing gates may need a mounting plate.

Measure the section size before ordering a lock.

A timber gate that has dropped will drag and stop the lock lining up. We can rehang the latch side and adjust the keep, but a gate whose hinges have pulled out of a soft post needs a fencer or joiner first. We will say so on the photo rather than fit a lock that will fail.

Common gate lock faults we are called about

Gates live outdoors, so their locks fail in predictable ways:

  • Seized cylinder. Rain and frost get into an exposed keyhole and the key stops turning. A weatherproof cylinder cover or a keypad lock avoids a repeat.
  • Latch no longer catches. The gate has dropped or the post has moved, so the latch rides past its keep. Realigning the keep often fixes it.
  • Bolt rusted solid. Cheap zinc plated padbolts corrode within a few winters. We replace them with heavier, better finished bolts.
  • Lock reachable over the top. A thumb turn or bolt within arm's reach of the outside is not much of a lock. We reposition it lower or fit a lock that needs a key or code on both sides.

Most of these are fixed in a single visit once we have seen a photo.

Shared passages, back yards and business gates

Many terraced streets have a shared passage between houses leading to the back yards. Before locking a gate across one, check that your neighbours do not have a right of way through it, and if they do, agree a keyed alike lock or a shared code so everyone can still get through.

Business yards and unit gates, common around Attercliffe and the Don Valley, often use heavier padlocks and hasps or metal gate locks. For those we work under our commercial locksmith service, and we ask for authority from the business before changing a lock.

Lost the key to a gate padlock? With proof that it is your property, we can remove it and fit a replacement, from £20 for a padlock or £35 for a combination padlock.

Getting a gate lock replacement quote from a photo

  1. Photograph both sides. Show the street side and the garden side of the gate where the lock will go.
  2. Show the post. We need to see the post or wall the gate closes against.
  3. Measure the frame. For metal gates, the width of the box section; for timber, the thickness of the frame.
  4. Tell us how you use it. Daily from both sides, or only from inside, changes the best lock.

Text the photos after calling 0114 463 0063 and we will quote before booking. Cylinder and padlock starting prices are on our locksmith prices page, and our full range is listed under locksmith services in Sheffield. If a house lock needs changing at the same visit, see lock replacement.

Questions and Answers

For a gate used from both sides, a keyed or mechanical keypad gate lock that opens by hand from the garden side, plus a bolt for nights away. For a gate only used from inside, a strong padbolt with a good padlock is often enough.
Gates vary, so gate locks are quoted from a photo of both sides and the post. Padlocks start from £20, combination padlocks from £35 and gate cylinders from £20. See our price list for more.
Yes, provided the gate frame is thick enough and sound. Mechanical keypad locks need no batteries, so they cope with being outside all year. We match the model to the frame thickness.
Often yes. Keyed gate locks that take a euro or rim cylinder can be fitted with a cylinder keyed alike to your back door, so one key does both.
Yes. Box section and tubular steel gates take box locks designed for metal frames, bolted through without welding. Send us the section size and a photo so we bring the right lock.
Only if your neighbours agree or have no right of way through it. Where a passage is shared, a keyed alike lock or a shared code keeps everyone able to get through. Check your deeds if unsure.
