Victorian semis around Hunters Bar and Banner Cross
Walk up from Hunters Bar roundabout and the side streets are lined with stone and brick Victorian and Edwardian houses. Many still have their original timber front doors, which is where most of our Ecclesall lock work happens. Further out, towards Greystones and Carterknowle, you find more 1930s semis with a mix of timber and replacement uPVC doors.
On a period timber door you will normally find two locks: a rim nightlatch (what people call a Yale lock) and a mortice deadlock below it. Typical problems are:
- A nightlatch that has worked loose on soft old timber, so the latch no longer catches cleanly.
- A 2 lever mortice that came with the house and does not meet insurance rules.
- A swollen door in winter that forces you to lean on it before the deadlock will turn.
Swapping an old latch for a new nightlatch or Yale cylinder starts from £20, a double locking nightlatch from £45 and a 5 lever BS3621 mortice from £75.
Do not forget the bay windows. Ground floor bays on Victorian semis are often fitted with replacement uPVC units whose handles have no key, or with a key nobody can find. New or repaired window locks and handles start from £40, and it is a quick add on while we are already at the house changing the door locks.
Student houses and lettings near Ecclesall Road
The terraces between Ecclesall Road and Sharrow are popular with students and young professionals, so many houses are shared lets that change hands every summer. Landlords and letting agents call us between tenancies to change the front and back door cylinders and to fit or rekey bedroom door locks.
For a typical shared house we recommend thumbturn locks on bedroom doors so nobody can be trapped inside, keyed alike or individually keyed depending on your agreement, and anti snap cylinders on the external doors. Getting to Ecclesall from our S9 base
From 45 Broughton Lane we take the Sheffield Parkway into town, go round the inner ring road and pick up Ecclesall Road (A625) heading south west. Hunters Bar is usually reached in about 25 minutes when the roads are clear. Banner Cross and the streets beyond add a few more minutes.
Ecclesall Road itself is the bottleneck. On a Friday or Saturday evening and during the weekday rush the traffic can crawl, so we quote up to 40 minutes at those times and sometimes cut through side roads to reach the upper part of S11. We confirm the time when you call and ring again when we are close.
