Our locksmith Crookes service gets you back into your home or gets your locks changed any time of day or night, across Crookes, Crookesmoor and Bole Hill in S10. We usually arrive within 25 to 40 minutes from our base on Broughton Lane, S9, and an emergency lockout starts from £59, with the price confirmed before anyone sets off.

Most of what we do up here comes from two things: old terraced houses with original timber doors, and shared student houses where keys go missing. We open doors without damage wherever possible, and we can change a lock the same day if a key has been lost or a tenant has moved out.

How we reach Crookes from S9, and how long it takes

From Broughton Lane we take the Sheffield Parkway into town, go round the inner ring road and climb up past the University of Sheffield, either along Western Bank or up Crookesmoor Road, until we are on Crookes itself. At night that is a quick run. In the morning rush, or when the university term traffic is heavy around Glossop Road and Western Bank, it takes longer, which is why we quote 25 to 40 minutes rather than a single number.

Parking is the other variable. Plenty of Crookes streets are steep, narrow and parked on both sides, so we sometimes leave the van on a flatter road and walk up with the tools. If you tell us your house number and door colour when you ring, we find you faster.

Victorian terraces and the locks they come with

The typical Crookes house is a Victorian or Edwardian brick or stone terrace, often with the front door opening almost straight onto the pavement and a back door reached through a shared yard or passage. Over a century, those doors have been replaced, patched and re-hung many times, so what you find behind each one varies a lot.

Original timber front door

Usually a rim nightlatch (the classic Yale type) plus a mortice deadlock lower down. Older mortices are often 2 or 3 lever, which many home insurance policies do not accept.

Worth upgrading the mortice to a 5 lever BS3621 lock, from £75 fitted.

uPVC replacement door

A multipoint lock driven by a gearbox, with a euro cylinder. On older terraces the frame is rarely square, so the door drops and the handle gets stiff.

Get stiffness looked at early; uPVC lock work starts from £20.

Back door off the yard

Often a timber door with a sash lock, bolts top and bottom and sometimes a padlocked gate on the passage.

Ask us to check it on the same visit; it is the door most people forget.

If your uPVC door only locks when you lift the handle hard, our guide to uPVC doors that will not lock explains what is usually failing and why forcing it makes the repair dearer.

Shared houses and student lets in Crookes

Crookes sits up the hill from the University of Sheffield, and a large share of its terraces are let to students and young professionals. That brings a very particular set of calls: a housemate locked out of their own room, a set of keys lost on a night out, and landlords who need every cylinder changed between the end of one tenancy and the start of the next.

What landlords usually ask us for

  • New euro cylinders on the front and back doors, keyed alike so tenants carry one key.
  • Bedroom door locks that open from the inside without a key, so nobody is trapped behind a locked door in a fire.
  • A quick look at window locks on ground floor rooms facing the street.

We can work to a key handover date, and if the house is empty we can meet a letting agent rather than the owner, provided we have written authority. Our landlord lock change service covers the paperwork side in more detail.

Tenants: check before you call

If you rent, your landlord or agent may already have a locksmith they use, or may hold a spare key. A quick call to them can save you the cost of a lockout. If you cannot reach them and you need to get in, we will ask for ID that shows the address.

What a Crookes locksmith gets called out for

These are the jobs that come up again and again in S10, what usually causes them and where each one starts on price. Your exact price depends on the lock and time of day, and we tell you before we set off.

ProblemCommon cause in CrookesWhat we doFrom
Door slammed with keys insideNightlatch on a timber door latches automaticallyNon-destructive entry where possible£59
Key snapped in the lockWorn copies of copies on old Yale keysExtract the broken part, test the cylinder£55
uPVC door will not lockDoor dropped on its hinges, gearbox wornAdjust, or replace the gearbox or strip£20

If you are locked out right now, our emergency lockout locksmiths page explains exactly what happens when we arrive. For a snapped key, broken key removal is usually quick, and you should avoid pushing the remaining piece further in.

Why doors stick on the top of Crookes in winter

Crookes is one of the more exposed parts of the city, and the wet westerly weather hits the front of these houses hard. Timber doors swell in damp months and shrink again in summer, which moves the keep out of line with the bolt. The symptom is a key that turns halfway and stops, or a deadlock that only throws if you pull the door towards you.

The fix is usually small: easing the door, moving or filing the keep, or lubricating the lock with a graphite or PTFE product rather than oil. Leaving it tends to end badly, because people start forcing the key, and that is how keys snap and cams break.

On older doors we often suggest pairing that adjustment with an anti-snap cylinder upgrade if a uPVC or composite door has been fitted, since many doors on Crookes terraces still carry the basic cylinders they were installed with.

Emergency locksmith near Crookes: neighbouring S10 and S6 areas

A trip to Crookes puts us within a few minutes of several neighbouring districts, so if you are just over the boundary, ring anyway. Walkley lies down the hill to the north, with a very similar mix of terraces. Broomhill and Ranmoor sit to the south, with larger stone villas and university halls, and Hillsborough is across the Rivelin valley.

Questions and Answers

Usually 25 to 40 minutes from Broughton Lane in S9, depending on traffic through the city centre and up past the university. Late at night it tends to be at the quicker end. We give you a time when you ring and call if anything changes.
Yes. We change or rekey the front and back door cylinders, and can fit bedroom locks that open from inside without a key. We can meet a letting agent if they have written authority from the owner. Cylinder changes start from £20 each.
Many policies ask for a 5 lever mortice deadlock to BS3621 on timber external doors. Older Crookes doors often have 2 or 3 lever locks that do not meet that. Look for the BS kitemark on the faceplate; if it is missing, a BS3621 lock is from £75.
Yes, both are part of our regular S10 run, along with Lydgate, the Crookes Valley Park area and the streets down towards Walkley. The arrival time and starting prices are the same as for central Crookes.
In most cases, yes. A nightlatch on a timber door can usually be opened without damage. If the mortice deadlock is locked as well, it takes longer and occasionally means drilling, which we explain and agree with you before doing anything.
Something linking you to the address, such as a driving licence, a tenancy agreement or a recent bill. If your ID is locked inside, we can check it once the door is open, before we leave. Students can use a tenancy agreement on their phone.
