We are a 24 hour locksmith in Broomhill, covering student houses, flats and period homes across this part of S10 and the Broomhall edge. From our base in S9 we usually reach Broomhill in 25 to 40 minutes. A lockout starts from £59 and a cylinder change from £20, and you get the starting price on the phone before we set off.
Broomhill sits between the University of Sheffield and the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, so a big share of our calls here come from tenants, landlords and hospital staff on shifts. Below we cover flats in converted villas, HMO room locks, communal doors and what to do if you are locked out of a rented room. The full list of districts is on our Sheffield areas page.
Broomhill and Broomhall streets we know well
We cover the student roads behind the Fulwood Road shops, the big villas towards Clarkehouse Road and the converted houses around Collegiate Crescent in Broomhall.
Useful landmarks for us at night include Weston Park and its museum, the Children's Hospital on Western Bank, the Royal Hallamshire on Glossop Road and the shops at the Broomhill junction. Uphill towards Crookes and Walkley, see our Walkley locksmith page and the Crookes locksmith page; further out along Fulwood Road, the Ranmoor locksmith page takes over.
How we get from Broughton Lane to Broomhill
Broomhill is about six miles from our base at 45 Broughton Lane, S9 2DF. We come in along the Parkway, round the inner ring road and up Glossop Road or Western Bank. Term time adds traffic around the university and the hospitals, and parking on the narrow side streets can take a few minutes, so we quote 25 to 40 minutes.
If you are in a flat, tell us which door you are locked out of and how we get to it: the main communal entrance, your flat door, or both. That saves time when we arrive. If you are closer to the city centre, our city centre locksmith page covers S1 apartments.
Converted villas, terraces and the locks inside them
Much of Broomhill was built in the Victorian and Edwardian eras as large family houses. Many have since been split into flats or let as shared houses, which means one building can contain several layers of locks.
The main entrance
Communal front doors are usually heavy timber doors with a nightlatch and a closer, or newer composite doors with a multipoint lock. When the closer weakens, the door stops latching and the whole building is left open. We adjust or replace closers and fit stronger latches.
Flat and bedroom doors
Flat doors normally have a nightlatch or a mortice sashlock. In shared houses, each bedroom has its own lock. These should let the occupant get out quickly in a fire without hunting for a key, which is why a thumbturn or a lock that opens by the handle from inside is the norm.
Rear doors and sash windows
Back doors onto shared gardens and lanes are often the weakest point in an older house. Original timber sash windows also need simple window locks, which start from £40 to fit or repair.
Owner-occupied period homes: front door upgrades
Not every big Broomhill house is let. Plenty are still family homes with their original panelled front doors, and the lock on many of them is a basic rim nightlatch that has been there for decades. A plain nightlatch can be slipped or opened through a broken glass panel, and it does not meet most insurers' requirements on its own.
There are three common upgrades, depending on the door:
- Double locking nightlatch from £45, which can be key-locked so the internal knob will not turn.
- Auto deadlocking nightlatch from £85, which deadlocks every time the door closes.
- 5 lever BS3621 mortice from £75, fitted below the latch as the insurance-rated lock.
We look at the thickness and condition of the door first, because old timber that has been cut for several previous locks may need a repair before it can take a new one. Our lock replacement page goes through the options.
Locked out of a student house or flat in Broomhill?
Before you call anyone
Check whether a housemate, your landlord or your letting agent can let you in. If not, we can help 24 hours a day. If anyone vulnerable is inside, or something is running such as a hob or a bath, call 999 first.
When we open a rented room or flat, we ask for photo ID plus something that links you to the address, such as a tenancy agreement, a student accommodation email or a letter. If your documents are inside, we check them once the door is open.
Tenants should usually not change the locks without their landlord's agreement, so check your tenancy before asking us to replace a lock. If the lock is damaged and needs replacing to secure the room, we fit the same type and you can pass the key details on. More detail is on our lockout service page.
Locksmith in Broomhill for landlords and letting agents
Shared houses in Broomhill change tenants every summer, and keys go missing in between. These are the jobs we do most often for landlords here:
| Job | When | Starting price |
|---|---|---|
| Euro cylinder change on a uPVC or composite door | Between tenancies or after a lost key | £20 |
| Lock rekeying | Keeping the lock body but issuing new keys | £25 |
| 3 lever mortice lock | Bedroom or flat doors | £40 |
| Master key system | One landlord key for every room in an HMO | £110 |
| Mailbox lock replacement | Communal post boxes in converted flats | £20 |
Our landlord locksmith service explains how we handle changeovers, and master key systems for shared houses covers keying options in more detail.
Snapped keys, lost bike keys and other student emergencies
Older locks in busy shared houses get heavy use, and cheap copied keys snap. If a key breaks in the lock, do not try to force out the remaining piece with the stub of the key. Our guide on removing a broken house key safely explains what you can try, and our extraction service starts from £55 if it will not come out.
If you have lost the key to a D lock or chain on a bike outside a university building or your house, our bike lock removal service can help, provided you can show the bike is yours, for example with a receipt, photos or a frame number registration.
All our starting prices are listed on the Sheffield locksmith prices page.
