Our composite door repair Sheffield service fixes composite front and back doors that will not lock, have dropped, or have a failed handle, gearbox or cylinder, with a mobile locksmith usually with you in 25 to 45 minutes and lock work from £20. Composite doors behave differently from plain uPVC: the leaf is thicker, heavier and more prone to bowing in sunshine, so the fix is often adjustment rather than new parts.
We confirm the starting price on the phone, and you can check typical costs on our Sheffield locksmith prices page before you call.
A composite door is a glass reinforced plastic skin over a foam or timber core, set in a uPVC or aluminium frame. That build gives it a solid feel and good insulation, but it changes how the lock and hinges work.
Leaf often around 44mm to 48mm thick. Needs a longer euro cylinder on the outside, carries more weight on the hinges and can bow slightly when one face heats up.
Usually needs keep and hinge adjustment as the seasons change.
Thinner, lighter panel in a reinforced frame. Standard cylinder lengths usually fit, and the leaf is less affected by sun on one side.
Faults are more often worn gearboxes than movement.
Plain uPVC faults are covered on our uPVC door lock repair page. If your door is timber, see front and back door repair. Aluminium or uPVC bifolds opening onto the garden are covered by our bifold door repair service, from rollers to locks.
One of the most common calls we get: the door locks fine in the morning but by late afternoon the handle will not lift. This is thermal movement. A dark grey, black or blue composite door facing south or west absorbs heat on its outer skin, the outer face expands slightly more than the inner face, and the leaf bows. The hooks and rollers at top and bottom then sit a few millimetres away from their keeps.
Lifting harder to make the bolts engage puts the strain on the gearbox, which is the part most likely to break. If the door only locks with force, leave it latched, keep the key safe and get the keeps adjusted.
The fix is usually to move or swap the keeps so they meet the bolts across the full range of movement, and to check the hinges are carrying the weight correctly. It is a short job when caught early, and far cheaper than a new mechanism.
Because the leaf is thick, the euro cylinder in a composite door is longer than most people expect, and it is often offset, longer on the outside than the inside. Fitting a standard size off the shelf can leave the cylinder sitting too far proud, which makes it easier to attack.
We measure from the centre fixing screw to each end and fit a cylinder that sits within about 3mm of the handle on the outside. If the cylinder needs changing anyway, it is worth choosing one rated TS007 3 star or Sold Secure SS312 Diamond, which are designed to resist snapping. See our anti snap locks page for the options, or the guide to why Sheffield homes upgrade to anti snap cylinders.
Composite doors use multipoint locks from makers such as Winkhaus, GU, Maco, Yale and Fullex. Some are manual, where you lift the handle to throw the hooks. Others are automatic, throwing latches or hooks as the door closes, so you only need the key to unlock.
When a composite lock fails, the symptoms tell us where to look:
We identify the lock from its faceplate and replace the gearbox or the full strip to match, so the existing keeps and handle holes still line up. Multipoint locks start from £40. The multipoint lock repair page goes into the parts in more detail.
A composite leaf is heavy, and over time the hinges settle. You see it as a scrape on the threshold or a tight spot at the top corner on the lock side. Most composite doors hang on adjustable flag hinges, which we can move sideways and up or down without removing the door. Worn or bent hinges are replaced like for like.
Handles are a separate job. Composite doors usually take lever pairs on a backplate with specific screw centres and a spindle long enough for the thicker leaf. We match the finish, whether chrome, gold, black or graphite, so the door still looks right. More on that on our door handle replacement page.
Composite doors are standard on most newer estates, from Waverley near Catcliffe to the developments around Beighton and Waterthorpe. If your home is new, it may still be inside a builder or door manufacturer warranty.
Before booking, check whether that warranty covers lock faults and whether it requires the original installer to do the work. If you are locked out, or the door cannot be secured, an immediate repair matters more, and we will keep any parts we remove so you can show them to the manufacturer. We are always happy to tell you on the phone if a warranty claim looks like the better route.
Three things help us arrive with the right parts: the door colour and which way it faces, what happens when you lift the handle and turn the key, and a photo of the lock faceplate on the edge of the door. Text it to us after the call if you can.
We give you a starting price before we set off and agree any change before work begins. Composite repairs are one part of our wider locksmith services across Sheffield, so if the visit reveals a second issue, such as a worn back door lock, we can quote for that at the same time.
