Slave leaf bolts freed so both doors are held top and bottom
Cylinders and mechanisms swapped after lost keys or a failure
Our patio door repair Sheffield service fixes sliding patio doors and French doors that are heavy to move, will not lock, or have a broken handle, cylinder or locking mechanism, with a locksmith usually at your door in 25 to 45 minutes. Patio cylinders start from £20 and uPVC door and window locks from £30, with the starting price confirmed before we begin.
Patio doors open onto gardens that are often out of sight from the street, so a rear door that will not lock is more than an annoyance. We aim to leave it secure on the first visit, and we say so plainly when a part has to be ordered.
The two types fail in different ways, so the first question on the phone is always which one you have.
One leaf slides behind a fixed pane on rollers running in a bottom track. Locks with hook bolts that swing into keeps on the frame, operated by a handle and a euro cylinder.
Common faults: worn rollers, misaligned hooks, missing anti lift blocks.
Two hinged leaves. The master leaf carries a multipoint lock and the handle. The slave leaf is held by shootbolts that drive into the head and the sill.
Common faults: seized shootbolts, dropped leaves, worn gearbox.
Single back doors and front doors are covered on our door repair page rather than here. Folding multi panel doors run on their own tracks and carriages, so they are dealt with on our bifold door repair page.
| Symptom | Usual cause | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| Door is heavy or grinds when sliding | Grit in the track or worn rollers | Clean, adjust roller height, or replace the roller carriage |
| Handle will not go down to lock | Hooks hitting the keep, not entering it | Re-align the keep or adjust the leaf height |
| Door locks but rattles | Keeps worn or set too far back | Move or pack the keeps for a firm close |
| Key turns but hooks do not move | Cam or mechanism failure | Replace the cylinder or lock case |
| Leaf can be lifted in its frame | Anti lift blocks missing or loose | Check and refit the blocks in the head |
Most of these are adjustment jobs rather than new parts, which keeps the cost down.
A sliding leaf with a double glazed unit is heavy, and all that weight sits on two small roller carriages. When the wheels wear flat or the bearings fail, the door drags, grinds and eventually jumps the track. Grit and leaves in the bottom track speed that up, which is why patio doors facing a lawn or gravel tend to suffer first.
Before anything is replaced we clean the track and try the height adjustment, usually a screw on the end of the sash. That alone often brings a door back. If the rollers are finished, the leaf has to be lifted out, which is a two person job on bigger doors because of the glass weight.
Roller carriages vary between uPVC and aluminium systems and between makers, so there is no single price. Text us a photo of the end of the sliding leaf and the track and we will quote before we come.
Broken or cracked glass is a glazier’s job. We can make the door secure in the meantime and advise on our emergency boarding up service if the pane is out.
Most uPVC sliding doors lock with two or four hook bolts that swing up or down into keeps in the frame. When the leaf sits too low or the keeps have shifted, the hooks clip the edge of the keep and the handle will not complete its travel. Adjusting the roller height to bring the leaf back up is often the real fix.
Older sliding doors have a known weak point: if the anti lift blocks in the head of the frame are missing, a sliding leaf can sometimes be lifted off its track from outside. We check for them on every sliding door we attend and refit or replace them where the frame allows.
The cylinder is the other risk. Many patio doors still have a basic euro cylinder. Upgrading to a TS007 3 star or Sold Secure SS312 Diamond cylinder is covered on our anti snap locks Sheffield page.
On a pair of French doors the main leaf can only be as secure as the second one. If the slave leaf is not bolted top and bottom, someone can push both doors open together even with the master locked.
Slave leaves are held by shootbolts operated by a small lever or handle on the edge of the door. Common faults we fix:
We clean and realign the receivers, adjust the hinges on both leaves so the meeting edge is even, and replace the shootbolt mechanism or master multipoint if worn.
If keys have been lost, a tenant has moved out or the mechanism is broken, a replacement is quicker than you might expect. Changing the cylinder alone is enough when the hooks and bolts still work, and starts from £20. When the lock case or multipoint strip has failed, we read the maker and backset from the faceplate and fit a matching unit, with multipoint locks from £40.
For general cylinder changes on other doors, see lock replacement, and for jammed mechanisms elsewhere in the house, lock repair in Sheffield.
A back door you cannot open from outside is one of the common ways people end up stuck. Our guide on avoiding being locked out of your house has practical habits that help.
When you call 0114 463 0063, three photos speed things up: the lock faceplate on the edge of the door, the end of the sliding leaf, and the bottom track or sill. With those we can usually tell you whether it is adjustment, a cylinder or a mechanism, and give a starting price.
Work is agreed before we start, out of hours charges are agreed before we set off, and you can pay by cash, card or transfer. Patio work is part of our wider locksmith services, and typical costs are on our prices page.
