Middlewood and Malin Bridge, out to Wadsley and Loxley

We are a mobile locksmith Hillsborough residents can call 24 hours a day for lockouts, broken keys, lock repairs and lock changes across S6, including Middlewood, Malin Bridge, Wadsley and Owlerton. From our base at 45 Broughton Lane in S9 we usually reach Hillsborough in 25 to 40 minutes. A lockout starts from £59 and a cylinder change from £20, and the starting price is confirmed on the phone before we leave.

Most of our work here is on Victorian terraces and interwar semis, so we carry the cylinders, nightlatches and mortice locks those doors take.

Hillsborough, Middlewood, Malin Bridge and Wadsley: where we cover

Our S6 patch runs from Owlerton and the stadium up through Hillsborough Corner, along Middlewood Road to the tram terminus, west to Malin Bridge where the Loxley and Rivelin valleys meet, and up the hill to Wadsley.

Next door we cover Walkley and its steep terraces and Crookes, and further north Chapeltown and High Green. Our full list of Sheffield areas has everywhere else.

How we reach S6, and why match days change the time

From Broughton Lane there are two sensible ways to Hillsborough. One is the Sheffield Parkway into the city, then north out of the centre on Penistone Road (A61) past Owlerton. The other skirts the north of the city through Brightside and along Herries Road, dropping down to Hillsborough near the stadium. We pick whichever is clearer at the time.

On a normal day or overnight that is usually 25 to 30 minutes. In the rush hour it can stretch to 40.

Sheffield Wednesday home games

On match days the roads around the ground, especially Penistone Road, Leppings Lane and Middlewood Road, fill up before kick off and again after the final whistle. If you call during those windows we will tell you honestly that it may take longer, and we may approach from Wadsley or Malin Bridge to avoid the crowds.

Hillsborough homes and the locks they usually have

Hillsborough is mostly terraced and semi detached. Victorian and Edwardian terraces fill the streets off Middlewood Road and around Hillsborough Park, interwar semis spread up towards Wadsley and Middlewood, and there are council built homes and newer developments around the edges, including the homes built on the former Middlewood Hospital grounds.

Home typeTypical doorUsual locksJobs we get called for

Post war council built houseuPVC or compositeMultipoint lockLock changes for new tenants
Newer buildComposite front doorMultipoint with anti snap cylinderHandle and cylinder faults

If your uPVC door has started to stick, our uPVC lock repair service covers gearboxes and keeps, and composite door repairs handles the heavier newer doors.

Back doors, yards and ginnels on Hillsborough terraces

On many Hillsborough terraces the back door opens onto a yard reached by a shared ginnel or passage. That door is out of sight of the street, and it is often the weakest one in the house: an old cylinder, a single lock, sometimes a key left in the inside for convenience.

For back doors we normally suggest:

  • An anti snap euro cylinder, TS007 3 star or Sold Secure SS312 Diamond, if it is a uPVC door. See our anti snap lock fitting.
  • A second lock, or a 5 lever BS3621 mortice from £75, if it is timber.
  • A keyed lock or stronger bolt on the yard gate, through our gate lock replacement service.

If you have already had a break in through the back, we can make the door secure the same night and board up broken glass. Our emergency boarding up service starts from £120.

Lock changes for rented homes in Hillsborough

A lot of S6 terraces are rented, to families, to hospital and university staff, and to students willing to travel in on the tram. That means plenty of lock changes when tenancies end.

For landlords, changing the euro cylinders on a uPVC front and back door starts from £20 each, and rekeying from £25. We can meet you or your agent at the property and hand the keys straight to the new tenant. Our landlord locksmith service has the details. Where a tenancy has ended through a court order, our eviction locksmith service attends with the bailiff or enforcement agent.

Tenants locked out should call their landlord or agent if possible, but if that is not practical at night, we can help once you show proof that you live at the address.

Locked out of your house in Hillsborough: how we get you in

The typical S6 lockout is ordinary: keys left on the kitchen side after nipping to the shops on Middlewood Road, a nightlatch that clicked shut behind someone walking the dog in Hillsborough Park, or a bag lost on the tram home. If a child or vulnerable person is shut inside, or something is left cooking, call 999 first.

When we arrive we ask for proof that you live there, then look at the lock. A timber door held only by a nightlatch, or a uPVC door where the handle was not lifted, can usually be opened without any damage. If the door is fully locked with a key, we explain the options and the cost before going further, and drilling is only ever a last resort.

If your keys are lost rather than locked inside, it is sensible to change the cylinder while we are there. Our lockout service page explains the process in full.

Snapped key in your Hillsborough front door?

Keys tend to snap in old, stiff cylinders on cold mornings, when someone forces the turn. If it happens, stop turning, leave the remaining piece where it is and do not use glue or a screwdriver, which usually makes the job longer and more expensive.

We extract broken keys from £55, and if the lock is worn we can replace the cylinder there and then. Our broken key extraction service explains the process, and our guide on removing a broken house key sets out what you can safely try first. All starting prices are on our locksmith prices page.
