Our uPVC door lock repair service in Sheffield covers every working part of a double glazed door, from a £20 cylinder change up to a complete multipoint lock, with a locksmith usually on your doorstep in 25 to 45 minutes. Because uPVC doors are a system of parts working together, we look at the whole door rather than the one bit that has failed.

Below is what each part does, how we match replacements to the many mechanisms fitted in Sheffield homes since the 1980s, and what each job typically costs.

The parts of a uPVC door lock we repair

Euro cylinder

The barrel your key goes into. Cheap to replace and the part most worth upgrading. From £20, with sizes and thumbturn options on our euro cylinder replacement page.

Gearbox

The case behind the handle that drives the whole locking strip. The most common mechanical failure on older doors.

Multipoint strip

The long steel bar down the door edge carrying hooks, rollers, bolts or mushroom cams. Replaced as a unit when worn throughout. Multi-point locks from £40.

Handles

Lever and pad handles with internal springs that tire. Swapped like for like or upgraded; see door handle replacement.

Hinges

Flag or butt hinges that adjust to lift a dropped door back into line.

Keeps

The receivers on the frame. Adjusting or repositioning them is often the whole repair.

Matching parts to your mechanism

Sheffield has decades of uPVC doors from many installers, and the lock inside could be from any of a long list of manufacturers. Names you may see stamped on the faceplate include Winkhaus, Fullex, Maco, GU, ERA, Yale, Avocet, Mila, Lockmaster and Hoppe, among others. Some older brands are no longer made at all.

We identify the mechanism from the faceplate markings, the shape of the hooks or rollers and a few measurements. Where an exact match is available we fit it. Where the original is discontinued, we can usually fit a compatible retrofit gearbox or a universal replacement strip sized to your door. We will tell you which route applies and the price before ordering anything.

The technical side of that matching, including backset, centres and split spindles, is laid out on our multipoint lock repair page.

uPVC locksmith jobs we do every week

  • Door will not lock. Usually alignment or a gearbox. Our uPVC door not locking guide breaks it down by symptom.
  • Key stuck or snapped in the cylinder. Extracted, then the cylinder kept or replaced. See broken key extraction.
  • Lock changes after lost keys or a house move. New cylinders keyed alike across front, back and patio doors.
  • Handle droops or has snapped. New handle set with the right spindle length and screw centres.
  • Door drops and catches the frame. Hinges adjusted, keeps moved.
  • Security upgrade. An anti snap cylinder, security handles or a letterbox guard.
  • Locked out of a uPVC door. Covered by our emergency lockout service.

Composite doors, patio doors and uPVC windows

Composite doors look different but use the same multipoint gear, cylinders and handles as uPVC, so almost everything on this page applies to them. Specific issues like a cracked skin or failed frame are covered by our composite door repair service.

uPVC French doors and sliding patio doors have their own locks, shootbolts and runners, and are dealt with on our patio door repair page.

uPVC window handles and espagnolette locks wear in the same way as door gear. If a window will not lock or the handle spins, we can repair it on the same visit; window lock installation or repair starts from £40, and more detail is on our window lock repair page.

uPVC door lock replacement or repair: which do you need?

Repair

Right when one part has failed on an otherwise sound lock: a gearbox, a handle, a worn cylinder, or a door that has dropped.

Usually the cheaper route.

Replace the whole mechanism

Right when hooks and rollers are worn along the length, the strip is bent, parts are discontinued and no retrofit fits, or the door has been damaged in a break in.

Costs more, resets the clock on the whole lock.

We will not push a full replacement when an adjustment would do. If the door itself is the problem, our door repairs page explains that side.

uPVC doors across Sheffield estates

The age of your door is a good guide to what we find inside it. Doors fitted in the 1980s and 1990s on estates around Gleadless, Stannington, Mosborough and Beighton often have older mechanisms with hooks or rollers that are now hard to source, so retrofit gearboxes are common. Doors from the 2000s onwards are more likely to have a current mechanism where like for like parts are still made.

New build estates usually have composite doors with modern multipoint locks, but the cylinders fitted at build are often basic. That makes a cylinder upgrade one of the most useful jobs on a new home. Wherever you are in the city, our areas covered page lists the postcodes we serve.

Making a uPVC lock last longer

Multipoint mechanisms are tough, but they are built on the assumption that the door hangs true and the handle is used as intended. A little care adds years:

  • Lubricate once or twice a year. A light spray of lock or silicone lubricant on each hook, roller and keep, then work the handle a few times.
  • Lift the handle all the way. Half lifting and then turning the key puts strain on the gearbox.
  • Notice when it gets heavier. A handle that needs more effort than last month is an early sign the door is dropping. An adjustment then is far cheaper than a new gearbox later.
  • Tighten loose handles. A wobbling handle lets the spindle rock in the gearbox and wears it out.

If you rent the property, report stiffness to your landlord early rather than waiting for it to fail.

What to expect when we arrive

We check the door in a set order: alignment first, then keeps, then handles and gearbox, then the cylinder. That order matters because a misaligned door will wreck a new gearbox in months. After the repair we run the lock through several full cycles with you, from inside and out, and show you how it should feel.

You pay by cash, card or bank transfer once it is working. Our full list of locksmith services in Sheffield covers the rest of the house, and all starting prices are on the price list.
