Night call outs

A door that will not shut tonight gets made secure tonight

Our door repair Sheffield service fixes front and back doors that have dropped, stick, will not latch or were damaged in a break in, usually reaching you within 25 to 45 minutes from our base on Broughton Lane, S9, with door repairs starting from £79. We carry hinges, keeps, packers and fixings in the van, so most doors are working and locking again on the first visit.

We are a locksmith first, so every repair ends with a lock that throws fully and a door you can trust overnight. If a door cannot be made secure straight away, we tell you before any work starts and what it will cost. Starting prices for every job are on our locksmith price list.

Door repair in Sheffield: the faults we fix most

Most calls fall into four groups. Each one has a different cause, so the fix and the price differ too.

Dropped uPVC and composite doors

The door sags on its hinges, the bottom corner scrapes the threshold and you have to lift the handle hard before the key will turn. Hinge adjustment and toe and heel packing usually cure it.

Damaged frames after forced entry

Keeps torn out, a jamb split along the grain or a frame pushed off its fixings. We rebuild the strike side so the bolts have something solid to engage.

Sticking timber doors

Painted softwood and hardwood doors that swell in wet months, rub on the head of the frame or will not close without a shoulder.

Hinges failing in old jambs

Screws spinning in worn holes, hinge leaves bent, or a heavy replacement door hung on hinges meant for something lighter.

Composite doors have their own quirks, from long cylinders to seasonal movement, and we cover them on our composite door repair page. Sliding and French doors are on the patio door repair service page.

Which door problem do you have?

Match what you are seeing to the most likely cause. It also helps you describe the fault when you call, so we bring the right parts.

The last row is a lock fault rather than a door fault. If that sounds like yours, our lock repair service explains the options, and a uPVC door that simply refuses to lock is covered under uPVC door not locking.

Emergency door repair after a break in or forced entry

A kicked door usually fails at the strike side. The bolts hold, but the timber or uPVC around the keeps gives way. On older timber frames the jamb often splits along its length, and on uPVC the keeps tear out of the reinforcement, leaving the door closed but unlocked.

If you have had a break in, report it to South Yorkshire Police first on 101, or 999 if anyone is still on the property, and get a crime reference number for your insurer. Then call us. We will:

  • Check whether the frame can be repaired in place or needs a temporary fix tonight and a full repair later.
  • Rebuild a split jamb with glue, screws and a steel reinforcing plate along the strike side where the timber allows it.
  • Refit or replace torn keeps on uPVC and composite frames.
  • Change the cylinder or lock if keys were taken or the old one was attacked.

When glass is smashed or the door leaf itself is too broken to close, boarding is the right first step. See our emergency boarding up service for that situation.

Why older Sheffield timber doors stick and swell

Much of the city’s terraced housing, from the steep streets of Walkley to the stone villas of Nether Edge, still has timber front doors. Softwood takes on moisture through any bare edge, so a door that closed easily in July can bind badly by November.

Before we plane anything we check the hinges. Often the door has not swollen much at all; it has dropped a few millimetres because the top hinge screws have lost their grip, and the leading edge now catches the frame. Fixing the hinge cures the rub without taking timber off.

Where planing is needed, we take the minimum off and you should seal the bare edge with primer or paint soon after, or the problem returns. We also check the lock. Many of these doors carry an old mortice deadlock that no longer meets BS3621, which some insurers ask for on a final exit door. A 5 lever BS3621 mortice can be fitted from £75 while we are there.

Fixing a dropped uPVC back door before the lock fails

A dropped uPVC door is the most common repair we see, and it is worth fixing early. When the leaf sags, the hooks and rollers of the multipoint strip no longer line up with the keeps. You compensate by lifting the handle harder, and that extra force is what eventually breaks the gearbox.

  1. Check the gaps. We look at the gap around the door and see where it pinches.
  2. Adjust the hinges. Most uPVC hinges have lateral and height adjustment under the cover caps.
  3. Repack the glass. If the leaf itself has sagged, toe and heel packers under the glazed unit square it up.
  4. Reset the keeps. Small moves to the keeps let the bolts engage without force.

If the gearbox has already gone, we replace it or the full strip. See multipoint lock repair for that work, which starts from £40 for the lock.

How a door repair call out works

When you phone 0114 463 0063, tell us the door material, what it is doing and whether it will lock at all. A photo by text helps. We give you a starting price on the call and confirm it before any work begins. Evenings, weekends and bank holidays can carry an extra charge, and that is agreed before we set off too.

On site we fix the cause, not just the symptom, then test the door several times with the key and the handle. You pay by cash, card or bank transfer once you are happy it opens, closes and locks as it should.

Door repairs sit alongside lock work across our full range of locksmith services, so if the job turns out to be both, you get one visit and one price.

When a repair is not the honest answer

Most doors can be repaired, but not all. We will tell you if the leaf has delaminated, the bottom rail has rotted through, or a uPVC frame has cracked at a welded corner. In those cases a new door or frame from a fitter is the right spend, and we can make the existing one secure in the meantime.

A repaired door is a good time to upgrade the cylinder. Snapping is a common attack on euro cylinders in uPVC and composite doors, and our guide to the benefits of anti snap locks explains what a TS007 3 star or Sold Secure SS312 Diamond cylinder adds.

Questions and Answers

Door repairs start from £79 for hinge, frame and alignment work. If the lock also needs attention, lock repairs start from £55 and a new cylinder from £20. We confirm the starting price on the phone first. See our full price list.
Yes. Split timber jambs can usually be glued, screwed and reinforced along the strike side, and torn keeps on uPVC frames can be refitted or replaced. Report the break in to South Yorkshire Police on 101 first so your insurer has a reference.
Yes. If a door will not shut or lock at night, we come out and make it secure, usually within 25 to 45 minutes. Out of hours work may carry an extra charge, which we agree with you before we attend.
Usually either the hinge screws have loosened and the door has dropped, or a timber door has absorbed moisture and swollen. We check the hinges first, because tightening or resetting them often cures the problem without planing.
Yes, and it is worth doing soon. The door has dropped so the locking points miss their keeps. Adjusting the hinges and keeps takes the strain off the gearbox, which otherwise tends to break and leave you unable to lock up.
Hinge adjustment and keep repositioning usually take under an hour. Rebuilding a split frame after forced entry can take longer, depending on how much timber is damaged. We tell you what to expect once we have seen the door.
