Our locksmith Dore service covers the whole of S17 around the clock: we open locked doors, change and repair locks and upgrade security on homes in Dore, Totley and Bradway. Driving from our base at 45 Broughton Lane in S9 we usually arrive in 30 to 45 minutes, and a home lockout starts from £59. The starting price is agreed on the phone before anyone leaves, and we always try non-destructive entry before considering a drill.
Locked out, key snapped, or just moved into a stone house with locks you know nothing about? Call 0114 463 0063 and tell us your road.
S17 is bigger than most people expect. It runs from the old village core around Dore green and Church Lane, down through Totley Rise and Totley Brook, across to Bradway on the Norton side and right up to the last houses before the moorland. We cover all of it, including the lanes where homes have names rather than numbers.
If you are just over the boundary we still come out. Neighbouring pages explain what we see in Bents Green and Greystones, along Ecclesall Road and Banner Cross and down in Norton Lees and Woodseats. The full list of districts sits on our Sheffield areas covered page.
Our van starts at 45 Broughton Lane, S9 2DF, on the east side of the city near the Arena and Meadowhall. Dore is close to the opposite corner, so we are not going to pretend it is a ten minute hop.
Most of the time we take the Sheffield Parkway into town, cross the inner ring road and head out on Abbeydale Road (A621) past Millhouses and Beauchief, turning up Dore Road or carrying on along Abbeydale Road South for Totley. When the centre is jammed we go round the south of the city on the outer ring road instead and drop down towards Bradway.
We ring when we are on the way so you are not standing on a cold drive wondering.
The housing in S17 is a mix: gritstone cottages and Victorian houses near the village centre, 1930s semis through Totley and Bradway, and a lot of larger detached homes from the post war decades onwards. Each brings its own locks.
Usually a mortice deadlock plus a rim nightlatch. Older ones are often 2 or 3 lever mortices that no longer satisfy an insurer, and the timber can swell in a wet winter so the bolt drags.
Best move: a 5 lever BS3621 mortice and a double locking nightlatch.
Multipoint locking with a euro cylinder. On larger detached houses these are often fitted to back and side doors as well as the front, and all of them share the same weak point: a standard cylinder.
Best move: TS007 3 star or Sold Secure SS312 Diamond cylinders on every external door.
Garden doors at the back of big plots are out of sight from the road. Sliding patio doors and French doors often have tired shoot bolts or a gearbox that will not throw.
Best move: a repair or new lock, plus a check of every locking point.
If your multipoint has started to stiffen, our multipoint gearbox and strip repairs page explains the warning signs, and patio and French door lock repairs covers the garden side.
Larger detached homes set back from the road with mature hedges are lovely to live in, but they give a burglar privacy. The front door is rarely the only way in. A sensible review looks at every external door, the garage connecting door and the ground floor windows together.
Here is what we usually suggest, in order of value for money:
Our guide on why anti snap cylinders are worth it explains the risk in plain terms without turning your front door into a fortress.
If a child or vulnerable person is locked in, or a bath or hob is running, call 999 first. Then call us.
Plenty of S17 lockouts happen to people coming back from a walk on Blacka Moor or the paths above Totley, keys lost somewhere on the moor or left on the kitchen table. Others are a nightlatch that slammed behind someone putting the bins out.
When we arrive we check ID or proof of address, look at the door and pick the gentlest method that will work. Most timber doors with a nightlatch, and most uPVC doors where the handle was not lifted, can be opened without damage. If the mortice is deadlocked we explain the choices and the price before touching it. Full details are on our emergency lockout service page, and our article on avoiding lockouts at home has simple habits that prevent a repeat.
Bigger gardens mean more locks. We regularly see up and over garage doors whose handle lock has seized, timber side gates with a rusted latch and sheds holding bikes and garden tools secured with nothing more than a cheap padlock.
If you are changing your front door locks after moving in, it is worth doing the garage and gates in the same visit, so every key you were handed by the previous owner stops working at once.
